Town to Face Lincoln in FA Cup
Monday, 5th Dec 2016 21:50

Town will play Lincoln City at Portman Road in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup, the Imps having beaten Oldham Athletic 3-2 at Sincil Bank in their second round tie this evening.

Ex-Derby striker Theo Robinson (2) and Terry Hawkridge netted the goals which saw Lincoln, who are managed by former Braintree boss Danny Cowley, into a 3-0 lead over the League One Latics, before Peter Clarke and Billy McKay were on target as the visitors staged an ultimately unsuccessful comeback.

The Blues and Lincoln, who are currently second in the Vanarama National League and are undefeated in 15 games in all competitions, have never previously met in the FA Cup.

They last played one another in the league in Town's 1960/61 Division Two championship season when Sir Alf Ramsey's side ran out 3-1 winners at home and 4-1 away.

Overall, Town have won five of the games between the sides, all of which have been in the second tier, and Lincoln three with two ending in draws.

The tie, which was first out of the hat when the draw took place at the BT Tower earlier this evening, is likely to take place on Saturday 7th January, although that’s yet to be confirmed.

The Lincoln squad includes defender Lee Beevers, who came through the Town academy and was a young pro at Portman Road before being released in the summer of 2003 without making a senior appearance. The 33-year-old was previously with the Imps between 2005 and 2009 before rejoining them after leaving Mansfield in the summer of 2015.

Boss Mick McCarthy is yet to win an FA Cup tie as Blues manager. Town's last FA Cup win was the 2-1 victory at Blackpool at the third round stage in January 2010 under Roy Keane’s management.

Last season the Blues were beaten at the third round stage by League Two Portsmouth - featuring Adam Webster - after a replay.

I was thinking it's great to play a non-league team, but the fact they are unbeaten in 15 is a concern. Expect Mick to have that fact up his sleeve for the pre and post-match interviews, it's a tough game but we hope to match them and stop them playing. :-)

As a Lincoln lad I'm not looking forward to the endless ribbing I'll get when The Imps turn over The Town 😬

MM OUT 👋

Think MM at the very last owes us fans the need to actually take a cup game seriously.
There is no need to rest players and concentrate on the league as other than a relegation battle we have very little to play for. The fact he has treated cup games with utter disdain in the past has seen us exit in the first round .....the tradition of us as a footballing side has been destroyed, please do not ruin the tradition of the FA cup!

I can see a giant killing happening here, and I wonder who we will get in the next round.

Anyone who gets annoyed with many changes made - several players need a game and if they cannot beat a side 3 divisions down,,,,, I wouldn't rest the blame at Mick's door at all.

If say Dozza / McDonnell / T.Smith / Bru / Best / Emmanuel / Kenlock / Gerken failed then I will not be having a go at MIck, I will feel very let down by them.

Does that mean Jonny Williams might actually get a start.
Still don't feel confident for this one.

Well, out played and well beaten by a league 2 team last year, let's see if we can actually beat a non league team this time. Why am I not confident ?

Should use the cup to get in a new manager and gain monentum from winning games!

I do hope Town have the good sense to let Lincoln have as many tickets as they want rather than restrict them to whatever the percentage is. They had 7000+ at the game tonight and I would think they will fancy their chances against us at the moment.
I can't see a big turnout from the home supporters so it would be good to get a decent away following in the ground and hopefully at reasonable ticket prices.

If an over fifties ladies pub team had come out of the hat against Ipswich with their recent cup record and the lack of confidence in the team I wouldn't fancy Town getting a result

The annual MM 3rd round exit! Que the excuses. Why have a cup run when we need to focus on our dismal league performance and "huff it!" negative style of play.

I'm hoping McCarthy will be out before this tie comes around.

McCarthy OUT

What's the betting on a 0-0 draw with them beating us in the second leg?

Please let's take this seriously this year. The money could prove handy in the Summer.

Would rather have got Arsenal at the Emirates and at least gone out in style and not with a wimper.

Would be a good chance for the club to give Season tickets holders some pay back after watching crap football all season by giving them FREE entrance. Like watching decent football no chance of that happening.

The last time a non-league side beat us was in the fifties, Bishop Aukland at Portman Road. The last time we played Lincoln was in 1961. I saw both! Bishop Aukland were of course amateur at the time but were probably paid more than the Town players. The Lincoln match was the old two halves, we were losing 1 - 0 at half time, then Roy Stephenson destroyed them.

I am not confident about our prospects!

No Mm talk up about them yet, indeed a giant killing in the making here. Which one plays the best football?

I expect the usual so called supporters praying we get beat so they can vent their anger at the club Sad days.

If Gerken plays, I hope Bart briefs him beforehand.

Not on the opposition, but on our defense...

BARTY

MM needs to go but I am confident we will beat Lincoln - then lets hope for a home tie against premiership opposition to hopefully see Portman Road almost full
