McCarthy: Red Card Affected Us More Than Them
Saturday, 10th Dec 2016 18:42

Town boss Mick McCarthy felt Sol Bamba’s second-half red card affected his side more than Cardiff after the Blues’ 1-1 home draw with the Bluebirds.

The visitors went ahead through Aron Gunnarsson in the 38th minute after Bartosz Bialkowski dropped a Peter Whittingham corner, before Luke Varney equalised for the Blues on 52.

“The game was going nowhere and arguably our most consistent and best player drops a corner,” McCarthy reflected.

“And he has been brilliant so I’ll have no recriminations with him at all because he made some good saves today as well.

“Fair play to the lads, they had a good response to that in the second half and got back in it and the sending off probably affected us more than it affected them, strangely enough.

“They sat in, made it difficult to play around them and through them. We were doing alright against 11 men, so I think it had a worse effect on us.”

Why does that happen sometimes? “I don’t know, maybe the thought of not winning against 10 men, the thought of maybe even losing against 10 men gets in players’ heads.

“And they’re no mugs, they put Anthony Pilkington and Craig Noone on as two subs and they aren’t too bad either. By no stretch of the imagination are they mugs.”

McCarthy was pleased with Varney, who scored for the second home game in a row: “He’s great, Reg. He’s an infectious character, he’s done great for me. And he just causes problems because he competes constantly, it was great to see him get his goal.”

Regarding the red card, McCarthy said: “I’ve seen a lot of players lose it, I’ve lost it myself, but never with the fourth official.

“He was trying to get at Dougie. Pits was going on and Didz was trying to stop him and he said, ‘Let him go’ because he could see what was coming. He couldn’t get at Dougie so he came and had a go at the fourth official.

“It probably was a foul but you can’t condone that whatever’s happened. He thoroughly deserved to be sent off, the way he approached the fourth official.

“It was a reaction to Dougie’s challenge because he went to go and get Dougie. He got stopped from doing that.

“You just can’t do it, you can’t behave like that. You’ve seen when anybody runs and throws their arms up they get booked.

“A lot had gone off. It took a long time before he went across. As I said, it was a foul on him, but the game went on, he gave them an advantage. It’s a red card.”

The Town boss was disappointed that his side were unable to create many chances against the 10 men.

“Of course I am,” he continued. “We got Bish on the ball once and he worked his magic, we got a freekick and we put the freekick over the bar. We’ve got to work the goalie, hit the wall, it might have skidded in. That deflates us.

“We got in behind them a number of times and didn’t put a decent cross in. I was banging on about that last week and I still am this week. And I will be.”

He added: “But as long as they keep getting in them and keep doing it, if they stop doing it that’s going to be a real problem. Keep doing it, keep getting on the overlap, keep getting crosses in and we’ll keep working on them.”

Having made the mistake that led to the goal, Bialkowski went some way towards redeeming himself with a late save from Craig Noone.

“Our game management was ridiculous there,” the Town boss reflected. “Whatever we do, if we’re one-all we just take the point, but we certainly don’t do what we did at the end by giving them a chance, giving them a freekick.

“Whittingham hit the wall, strangely enough, he got a corner. They had a chance from the corner, they had a chance from the other corner. They just kept sustained pressure on and Noone right at the very death could have nicked it. Thankfully, he didn’t.”

Yes Mick it is difficult to settle for a draw against 10 men. All plans of just not losing were right out of the window...did not have a plan to actually win the game!!!

Funny that isn't it Mick. Usually 11 v 10 makes it easier for the team with 11, but you manage to make it easier for the 10.

I think Jonathan Douglas has joined Geraint Williams as my least favourite ever Town player.

Quote McCarthy “They sat in, made it difficult to play around them and through them. We were doing alright against 11 men, so I think it had a worse effect on us.”

Is there any depth that Dino won't sink too to justify his lack of management talent and vision.

Did anyone ask Mick why Williams sat on the bench the whole 90 minutes when we were crying out for creativity?! What has the guy done wrong? What was the point of signing him on loan if we are never going to use him? He looked good in Euro 2016, yet can't get in a poor Ipswich side ahead of Douglas. Is it because we have to pay money if we play him? Questions need to be asked surely!

As to the match, another disappointment as we fail to beat another of the relegation contenders, this time with 10 men. Cardiff very nearly won it.

Also, why do we never contest a dropped ball? We let Cardiff kick it long for a throw, which we took, lost, and were under pressure for the whole of injury time.

It's actually insulting the way he thinks he can spout such nonsense and we'll buy it. How on earth can it affect us more than them?! I love how he talks about the wonderful "Bish" after every game without ever even giving him more than 10 minutes to make any impact on a game. I'm actually sick to death and cringing at the amount of nicknames he has. Reg, Dougie, Gerks, Chambo, Bez, Didz etc get a grip you're their manager, not your pals!!!

Mick contradicts himself massively here...one minute he says they sat back and made it hard to play around them after they went down to 10 men and then at the end he says that they kept sustained pressure on....?

Which was it Mick? Just spouting out rubbish as per usual.

"Whatever we do, if we're one-all we just take the point" - sums up Mick, his tactics and his tenure here at Ipswich.

"We got Bish on the ball once and he worked his magic" - just a shame it took until the 80th minute for him to get on the pitch. Imagine what it'd have been like if both Bishop AND Williams were on the pitch!

Maybe it's time for us to organise a game or two where everybody who wants Mick out and has decided to stay away (myself included) turns up, boosts the attendance by 5k plus (must me more than that too!) and protests/chants for him to go. He's said himself that until that happens, nothing is going to change. It's time for us to start trying to force a break up between the MM/Evans status quo....

'Reg is great' says big Mick! He wasn't that great at the end of last season whe he was released! He is a trier, an honest pro but as far as ability is concerned he is at best average for the championship? I would ask two things, what positives can we draw from today's game? What player with the exception of possibly Mings has improved under the coaching of big Mick and TC? Time to go Mick, thanks for saving us 4 years ago but time has moved on, do the honourable thing!

G Williams was the most negative player I'd ever seen at the time, symbolic of our miserable last couple of seasons in the Premiership in the early 90s.

Has the pants season started early?? Micks statement is a joke!
He should hpjust admit that we had no creativity with full backs that offer nothing going forward and Skuse and Douglas like a pair of tortoises that only ive the ball sideways or backwards.
If it was a one off then we can accept it but the decline is ongoing and entrtainitment hs been next to zero for eighteen months.
Us fans deserve better!!

Mick Mills on the radio said he could not understand why he wants two midfield players looking after the Back four ???? the Back four can look after themselves ,so that would leave room for TWO CREATIVE Midfielders. But McCarthy is so defence minded that he cannot get out of the Habit !!!!
So a trip down to Bournemouth and get some lessons from Eddie Howe on attacking football and brainwashing is still on the cards ????
Because McCarthy will still be here next year ??????????

MR EVANS,
I'm one of 7000+ ....yes Seve thousand fans who has walked away from watching this drab dinosaur football.
My son is now 16 and has asked to go watch like he used to all the time and the pair of us haven't been since Xmas two years ago. What does that tell you?
I'd rather go for a ten mile run and lick the sweat off my sweaty ball than pay £30 for your utter dross you are serving up. You need to change the dinosaur and quick or 7000 going missing will turn into 10,000.
I've seen more ambition in my dog being told he has to have a bath than I've seen at Portman road in a verrry long time.

Good job they didn't go down to 9, our players wouldn't know what to do. They would actually and that's to now have 3 defensive midfielders and make sure that points secure.
