McCarthy: No Signings Close But Bids In
Friday, 13th Jan 2017 13:48

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he has bids in for players but says he won’t have any new signings in his squad until next week at the earliest.

Questioned about progress on January signings, he said: “There’s none in the building and there won’t be anybody in for tomorrow now.

“And if they come in they can’t play on Tuesday, they need to be in the building for the first FA Cup tie, so we’ll have to wait and see next week.”

Does he feel he’s edging closer? “Not really, no. Anything that we’ve attempted to do has just been knocked back at the moment.”

He says there is nothing new on Preston striker Jordan Hugill, who Preston boss Simon Grayson confirmed yesterday had been the subject of Town interest.

“I asked Simon after we played them here about him, actually,” the Town boss continued. “There’s nothing further, no.”

Quizzed on whether he’s currently got any bids in for players, McCarthy responded: “Yes.”

Outlining the process the Blues manager, whose top target is still understood to be Rotherham frontman Danny Ward, added: “It’s a bit like bidding for a house, you ring up and some say they’ll think about it, some say he’s not for sale and some say ‘foxtrot oscar’.

“Some say we’ll discuss it with the board and come back and generally they always say no. That’s what’s happened so far.”

Is he hopeful that the latest bids might be more successful? “Yes, if I haven’t got hope I wouldn’t have anything, would I? I’ve always got to be hopeful that one of them will drop.”

McCarthy says he’s received tentative interest in some of his squad: “I think there may be [some interest].

“I’ve had no direct calls, but the usual. A lot of agents are trying to drum up business, that’s their job in the window. They only get two windows to do it now they can’t go through the season. But no firm interest, none that I would even consider anyway.”

Can't see us being that appealing as a club at the moment, we really need to look at league 1 players like when we got Walters or premier league players around 21-25 who haven't made it like grant ward, anyone in the championship who's worth looking at will choose a derby/Norwich/Brighton who can offer better wages and are play off hopefuls

Wouldn't have Hugill, prefer Adam Rooney or Jason Cummings from Scotland

Big change here in our ability to secure new signings from the early days when MM just got it done.
Hate to see it, but it'll be loans who don't turn into permanent signings.
If anything happens at all that is.

I thought at pre-season that Mick looked like he'd had enough. I now really think he has had enough - especially with us supporters.

Maybe Evans won't settle his contract and let him go. Who knows.

Still think we should be trying for Omar Bogle of Grimsby... apparently there's been interest, and apparently bids turned down - wouldn't have been us, I know, but would be the sort of player we would do very well with, if only that wallet would open a bit wider...

Marcus Bignot, Grimsby manager...

"People are saying we're asking millions for Omar. We haven't put a price tag on his head. We've said he's not for sale but we can't stop football clubs putting in offers.

John has said he's not for sale and credit to him because he's showing ambition. With Omar Bogle, we can get success.

I don't know whether that right offer — that we can't turn down — will come in January, the summer or the year after."

A real sad state of affairs. The enthusiasm and excitement of Marcus Evans taking us over and now look at us. A team going nowhere, with a lot of disgruntled supporters and a brand of football which is dreadful and mind numbingly one dimensional. I ask you, who would want to sign for us?

ITFC, MM and Evans ?...... its all got a very lethargic , end of season feel and a distinct aroma of staleness about the Club now. Little wonder we can sign anyone. The fees being banded about are suicidal, and we simply cant afford to dabble.

No, the Club shot themelves in the foot not for letting Murphy go without a replacement lined up, but more for not PLANNING at least a season ago to get someone in for the player.

The Academy playesr: If they are not "good enough" to be put in the team, DONT put them on the bench unless you intend to play them.

If they are good enough , PLAY THEM.

There just seems to be some fundamental issues with this once great Club now . Are all levels of the playing staff , playing to the same tactics? I suggest, No! Why do we always get players in that are returning from injury and need building their fitness up ......or players that are always injury prone. WHY??? They cant enhance ITF frist team squad can they. All they do is take up valuable financial resources, so MM cant go and sign another player.

ITFC really does appear and more worringly FEEL like a Club in decline. The powers that be , have either little interset or little control over the Clubs direction and impetus. We are slide ever South ward IMO . Another loss Saturday ( can anyone REALLY see us winning ?) and we are within spitting distance of a relegation dog fight.

All very depressing .

With players able to see the toxic treatment being served up by the so called supporters at PR it is not difficult to see why players will not sign ! Would any player in his right mind wish to suffer the treatment being dished up at PR ? When players are being reviled even before the game starts it is no wonder they find problems in playing to their full potential and levels !

The bottom line as we all know is that if you sell your best players continually and replace them with lesser quality ones you are only going to become a worse team as a result. This club will not attract any quality players in this window. What club in their right mind will want to sell their decent players and, if they are prepared, clubs richer that us will sweep them up.

ZZZZ.. after a big man to lump it up to, no thanks. Can we have a manager in who signs a centre midfield player who can pass the ball so that the strikers we have who are pretty decent are not feeding off scraps? Too much to ask is it not?

So if we were all happy-clappy and smiley despite being served a diet of long ball defensive football would we be in a better position? I doubt it very much.

I think most Ipswich supporters are quite patient and are able to put up with defeat if we could see progression. All we see is long ball defensive football. We are told to get behind the team but what is there to get behind? A bunch of donkeys led by a ultra cautious manager whose idea of taking a risk is to actually try and win a game. I'm fed up of having to listen to a manager who thinks playing passing football is somehow sexy and will lead us to League One.

I want to get behind the team, I really want to - but at the moment what is there to get behind?

Yer Been saying about the same for about 3 years blueblood but no one is listening, suppose we do need a striker now as well though.

We are not an attractive option to any player. A manager who plays boring football, a system which doesn't improve players, an owner with no ambition...the only thing to attract them would be money and we don't offer any. So other than a lad from a lower division looking for a stepping stone up, who would touch us?

MM you are wrong! You press submit and your bid goes to the central processing unit. If you offer a ludicrous amount the computer says "yes" and that player promptly scores on his debut. I know this is true, I won the Champions League eight years running when I was manager of Glasgow Rangers...........

The mistake made so far in the market was to not do everything to sign Daryl Horgan from Dundalk, maybe we did offer as much as Preston did and he opted for Preston, believe he was on a free transfer so wages likely the tipping point. He is exactly what we don't have. Played the last 15 minutes vs Arsenal in the Cup and looked dangerous every time he was on the ball.

@hoppy

I'll be at Grimsby v Exeter tomorrow. Could be his last game here. I think he could be a future option for us but he's not ready to fill Murph's boots at all just yet.

What a total joke of a football club we have become!!
And you feel we haven't even reached the bottom yet
Between them Evans and #anker are killing our once proud club, sorry times indeed !!

Why don't we just go for players who would want to play for us & don't hold too much of a price tag. It's obvious mr Evans isn't going to get his wallet out, meaning giving Mick £3 or 4 million to spend.
We won't get anyone if we keep going in for players from rival clubs & not not going to pay the fee's they are asking for.
League one players to look at - Billy Sharp - sheff Utd, Lee Gregory - Mwall, Josh Morris Scunthorpe, Chris McGuire, Oxford, they are all banging the goals in for their clubs, sign one of them up, should cost 75k - 1m for a good player who should be able to carry on scoring goals in the championship!!!

I feel like Arnie and Matt, that the club is on the decline.

Have witnessed this before of course in 50+ years;but have only had two highs in the nearly 10 years that Evans has owned the club. The League Cup Semi-Final under Roy Keane and reaching the playoffs under this manager, and there is nothing on the horizon to indicate anything is about to change, with Mick seemingly having trouble getting players into the club now unlike when he first arrived.

Two or three on here have berated people like me,and many others, for being so downbeat;and partly blaming the fans for not giving the team their undying support regardless.I don't set out to be pessimistic, and want ITFC to do well.

I will go tomorrow, more in hope than expectation;but do not feel that a boycott serves any useful purpose either.
