'Tristan Dyer' to Make First-Team Breakthrough This Season
Wednesday, 25th Jan 2017 10:51

Kieron Dyer expects 17-year-old midfielder Tristan Nydam - or Tristan Dyer, as he jokingly refers to him - to make his Town first-team debut before the end of the season.

The Zimbabwe-born, Colchester-raised academy product was on the bench for the first time for a competitive game at Huddersfield at the weekend, having previously come on as a sub for the senior side in the pre-season friendly at Cambridge United.

Dyer is a big fan of the first-year scholar, who he has kept a close eye on as he has progressed through the academy.

Nydam, who signed a pro deal in November, was on standby for the England U17s ahead of the European Championships last summer.

“Tristan will definitely make his debut before the end of the season,” Dyer told TWTD. “He’s been injured all over Christmas so I was surprised to see him on the bench because I don’t think he’s had much training or football.

“He’s an all-action player, he’s a completely different player to Andre Dozzell. Whereas Andre is more of a creator when he gets on the ball, Tristan is up and down the pitch, has an engine, is fast, strong, can tackle, can pass.

“I always joke and call him ‘Tristan Dyer’ because he’s quick and he’s got an engine, he can run all day. He’s definitely one to watch out for.

“He’s a humble boy, the way he plays is the way he trains, 110 per cent. He has a great attitude.

“Mick was probably never going to bring him on at Huddersfield because we were losing and the team are so fragile at the moment, but hopefully once we’re safe and there are a few games left before the end of the season, I definitely think Mick will give him a go.”

Meanwhile, Barnsley wideman or striker Marley Watkins is reported to have handed in a transfer request at Oakwell.

The 26-year-old is said to be interesting a number of clubs, including the Blues, who had a £1 million offer for him rebuffed in August, and Bristol City.

Watkins, who previously played for Terry Butcher at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Some Barnsley sources also claim Town are monitoring the situation of 23-year-old Tykes midfielder Josh Scowen, who is also out of contract in the summer.

Scowen joined Barnsley from Wycombe Wanderers in January 2015 for a fee of £240,000.

i think Dyer giving him that moniker is probably cursing him to a life of injury.

Bring him on! The more youngsters that can make their debut the better. Start looking ahead to next season, regardless of what division we're in.

Wow! This sounds promising... good luck to the boy but sounds like exactly what we need at the moment. Someone who gets around the pitch, sticks a foot and can make a pass.

Nydam sounds very promising for the future, just the type of player we need,I don't think we've had decent box to box midfielder since Tommy Miller.
Both the Barnsley boys would make good signings, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Sounds like he has all of the exact qualities that our midfield so desperately lacks at present. I hope he goes on to be as good as Kieron hopes. Interesting that Watkins has handed in a transfer request. I expect that will be our next signing.

This is good news in theory. However, "breakthrough" too often means that a player makes his debut, but then does not get many chances in the next couple of years, before falling out of the picture, and eventually sliding off to the lower leagues. Give these youngsters a chance- if Hourihane can thrive at Barnsley, then why on earth should the likes of Dozzell, Bishop, Nydam, Emmanuel and Kenlock thrive at Ipswich?! Given that we can't compete financially, we need to have more than just one (or sometimes two) homegrown players starting. This should surely be a short to medium term aim?

"He's fast, strong, can tackle and pass" so why the hell isn't he playing in the first team?? Surely 17 is old enough, why do we wait and wait and wait on our youngsters? We produce them then we're scared to play them and they fizzle out or get sold before we've had any use out of them.

we need energy - and if this kid has it - release him and let him play

This should be good news, BUT with Mick he will no doubt still continue to play the worst midfielder in the league.

An all action player who gets up and down the pitch? Sounds great and I hope to see him play.

But unlikely under MM. Dougie is far more likely to start.

Great news but like so many of our promising kids over the last few years he's just going to get lost in the non-football that's getting drilled into the first team..McCarthy had no problem throwing the likes of Dozzell,McDonnell,Emanuel,Kenlock in at the back end of last season when there was bugg3r all to play for..I was expecting tose kids to have 20-30 games under their belts this season but nope,McCarthy obviously doesn't trust them or have enough faith..but he does have continuing faith in his faves who continually underachieve.

God I hope we get in a manager and coaching staff during the coming weeks/months who can really develop these kids like Sir Bobby & Burley used to do with such ease, otherwise it's a waste of time having an academy just so they can get 45 minutes here and there when Mick's faves are injured.

Dozzell should be playing the rest of this season to get some experience into him but alas Mick's decided to bring in a 29 year old Leeds player on loan - how is that benefitting our future players?

17 Is plenty old enough to play for me both he and Dozzell should be 2 of our three midfielders

Lost 4-2 in extra-time at Forest in the third round. Nydam was injured so missed the game.

Looks a great prospect however will his ability be trained out of him by the Dino, he'll have to learn to lump the ball forward aimlessly. It is high the ds were given a chance, our season is over in reality and we are not too far from being safe so why persist with the likes of Douglas, Berra etc. Do hope we don't take up the option on Douglas. A worrying aside is the number of injuries that seem to happen in training, maybe the players are coached to kick 7 bales out of each other in the style of Dino in his playing days, let's fait wasn't much of a player as the great Brian Clough once said.

A 17 year old with no fear and full of energy or a 35 year old really lacking confidence who is getting booed by his own supporters and has done nothing over last two seasons , which one to bring on ?
These are the decisions that have cost you the backing of supporters MM

MM should take a leaf out of Kieron Dyers book. He,s at least showing some optimism.

I have had the pleasure of working with this young man as he was a student at the school I work at. He is an excellent fella and his commitment is without question. I have seen him play both for Ipswich and also in the PE lessons at school. He loves the club and is fully focussed on Ipswich Town. Tris is a product of the future but his commitment on and off the field is excellent. He used to practice free kicks on the playing field at lunchtime and I am sure this young man was aiming for my head although he always claims it was "the cross bar challenge"!!!!
Well done Tris, St Bens are proud of you!!!
