Forest Linked With Skipper Chambers as Final Day Gets Under Way
Tuesday, 31st Jan 2017 09:37

A claim that Blues skipper Luke Chambers is being targeted by his former club Nottingham Forest is the first transfer link involving Town as the final day of the transfer window gets up and running. Clubs have until 11pm this evening to sign players.

According to Sky Sports News, Forest are in talks regarding the signing of Chambers, 31, who left them for the Blues on a Bosman in the summer of 2012.

However, even if there is interest from the Tricky Trees, Town are highly unlikely to allow their captain to move on, particularly with central defensive options limited at the present time.

Adam Webster is set to miss the rest of the season, while Tommy Smith is another few weeks away from a first-team return.

Chambers’s contract is up at the end of the season but the Blues have an option for a further year with manager Mick McCarthy recently describing the Kettering-born defender as “important to me as captain” after previous reports of interest from Wolves.

The former Northampton man admitted his frustration that a new contract was yet to be offered earlier this month, but in the past Town have tended to trigger options towards the end of seasons and then enter discussions regarding extended terms.

Speaking yesterday afternoon, McCarthy said he was unaware of interest in any of his players.

Town are understood to be working on a number of potential deals ahead of tonight’s deadline with McCarthy still searching for a striker to replace Daryl Murphy who departed for Newcastle towards the end of the summer window with the Blues boss appearing to have given up on persuading Preston to part with Jordan Hugill having had a £2 million bid rebuffed last week.

Would be ridiculous to let him go without a proper replacement and preferably a long term one. We lack leaders as much as it is and Chambers is a leader. It leaves us way too short at the back in terms of cover and quality!

Definitely need a fair few signings today if we are to let Chambo go, otherwise it really doesn't look good fore the rest of the season!!

Not a great situation. Chambers looks good in CD and is a good leader for the team. Gutted if we lose our club captain on transfer deadline day, a real kick in the teeth.

loosing chambers would be very bad news. underrated leader whos grit and passion may become vital come the last weeks of the season. keep.

Any idea where this story has sprung up from, Phil?
I can't see it happening and hopefully won't, but also hope it doesn't unsettle our preparations for tonight's game, for our skipper to be subject of speculation like this.

Bloody hell 4 positive comments in a row about Chambers, I'm going to have to sit down.

Part of me would let this deal happen, go with Berra,Taylor & Smith as main CB but then use the likes of Fowler as back-up to hopefully give experience for the future. Surely that is adequate for us for the rest of the season.

If the right money is offered Mick will take it and rightly so

This would be typical Ipswich (and classic Evans) if we did let him leave with no replacement in sight.

Can't see this happening. He may go in the summer but he's in a similar position to Berra. While we have so many injuries and at a time where we need a bit of leadership, it'd be crazy to allow him to leave.

I think if Chambers does make the move then something is seriously wrong at ITFC. Wasn't long ago that players were saying how wonderful it was to be with town but when was the last time anyone came out and said how great Mick & TC were been very quiet. Sky are saying "FOREST IN FOR CHAMBERS

Sky Sources: Nottingham Forest are in talks to sign Ipswich Town captain Luke Chambers.

Chambers' Ipswich contract runs out in the summer, and left Forest on a Bosman in 2012. The 31-year-old can play centre-back or right-back."

TCisdynamite. I can't be ignorant as I know exactly what Chambers brings to the club....Mistakes.

The ignorant think he's a decent CB..... he is not.

A decent fist pump & being a nice bloke doesn't make him a leader or a decent footballer.

Would not blame the bloke for leaving after the stick he gets on this board. Been a great leader for the Club and hardly his fault he has been played out of position. We will miss his leadership off the field as well. This is not good for ITFC if it happens.

Im not slagging off luke by saying I would let him go, He has done ok being asked to play out of position, plus being a decent leader. just think that it may be the right time for both parties for him to go. when Smith is back fully fit that will mean we have 4 CB that would probably expect to start, Plus Digby, Plus younger kids like fowler who could step in for a game or 2. that's top heavy.

Sometimes a change like a new captain freshen things up for the club.

t's amazing what a few weeks of Chambers at CB can do to transform this comments section. Top captain and has been very solid in the middle.

Honestly if he does go some 'fans' will be as much to blame as the club.

Sir_Bob - a strong centre half at this level. if chambers goes who are you planning on playing at the back? Berra- been poor all this season and clearly wants move away. micks mate 'diggers' has barely played and isn't strong enough. Webster - out all season. smith still not back and will take a few weeks to get back into things. - taylor who played 10 games in a poor US league and hasn't played since 2016? not looking good.

Chambo moving on wouldnt surprise e at all. As I said on here a couple of weeks ago, after the Bristol away defeat , He was very dissolusioned with things at the Club, the way the fans ahd turned on the players / manager and dissolusiond with football general.

Suspect he wants fresh start. Who can blame him . For three years + Mick has constantly played him out of position( hardly for better CB's ). He's a good club captain and plays his best football at CB , but he rarely gets that opportunity ( not the only player to be played out of positio either).

If he goes , Id say "Good Luck Luke and thanks"

Taylor as replacemnt ?...well yes maybe , IF he can stay fit !!

Good servant to the club, no doubting his off field atributes, unfortunately MM has sold him down the river playing him out of position, and for that reason I feel for the bloke. From my point of view if we are going to progress next season then we are better off without him as he ain't up to it (to many mistakes) imo.
If he goes today it's no big deal as we will continue to pick up points here and there as Dino will maintain his policy of being hard to beat, stifle the game etc, etc, etc. All will be revealed when the teams are announced laters.
