Town Linked With Loan Move for Reading Striker Samuel
Tuesday, 31st Jan 2017 13:35

Town are reported to be one of a number of clubs keen on signing Reading striker Dominic Samuel on loan.

According to HITC Sport the Blues are one of six clubs interesting in landing the 22-year-old and are said to be leading the chase. Southend United had previously been linked.

Southwark-born Samuel came through the Reading academy and has made eight starts and eight sub appearances for the Royals first team, scoring twice, in addition to loan spells at Colchester, Dagenham and Redbridge, Coventry and Gillingham.

Capped three times by the England U19s, scoring two goals, 6ft 2in tall Samuel netted six goals in 12 starts and one sub appearance for the Sky Blues during the second half of their 2014/15 League One campaign and then seven times in 24 starts and one sub appearance for the Gills between November 2015 and the end of last season, also in League One.

Prior to those spells he had made only two appearances with the U's and one with the Daggers, both without scoring.

Speaking about his plans for Samuel a few days ago, Reading manager Jaap Stam told getreading: "I think several teams are interested in Dom but we need to make a decision about that," said the manager.

"Because if you let somebody go you need to have somebody in as well. We know Dominic's quality, he's got ability which can help us out.

"But he is still a young player and needs to learn a lot, and for him it's very good if he can play week in, week out to develop.”

Speaking yesterday, Town boss Mick McCarthy confirmed that he would be continuing his search for a striker to replace Daryl Murphy during the final day of the window."

The Blues, who have previously targeted Rotherham’s Danny Ward, Preston’s Jordan Hugill and Barnsley’s Marley Watkins among others, would ideally want a permanent signing but may have to settle for a loan having been unable to agree a fee for a longer term addition.

I don't know about anyone else but I'd much rather the club invest in short term loans that make other clubs young players better. Buying young players outright or playing our own young players just seems a bit dated.

Please not another loan of a development player! Let's make permanent signings or develop our own talent.

Good promising player however not an answer to our immediate striking problems..... Smacks of desperation I'm afraid!

Didn't expect anything less than to sign some reject on loan. With our position in the league we should either be signing permanent players or developing what we already have. It really is embarrassing how our club is run.

What can the club do? Blow the budget? Pay silly money? We are trying. If we actually coughed up 4 million for Hugil and got him this forum would be a wash with comments about the waste of money.

We make a bid, its knocked back thats upto the other club. Better to get a loan bod in now and go again in the summer where the bang for your buck is better than pay over the odds for the sake of getting simply anybody in

That's called Plan B.

All this questioning if the club have even made bids, the local press all seem to back the claims with stories about Ward, Hugil and Watkins featuring in the relevant local rag.

The club is trying and trying hard. That's all I ask.

The club's merely treading water in this division. We're just not a very attractive proposition.

Evans not giving Mick Enough £ to buy a striker & when we do bid on one it's too low...

We don't need any more loans not worth it....

Evans pumping into the academy but we need to players who are good now..

We going no where this season.

Who? How we have fallen! What worries me is that Wolves have just shelved out nearly 13 million!!!!!! for a player!

Not the answer... and definitely not the answer if loaned.. we are one step forward and two steps back come the summer... need a perm replacement for Murphy or not at all...

No No No

Why would we develop another loan player for one of our league rivals ???

Permanent signings of proven quality.
