Lawrence Expected to Be Fit and Rowe and Huws in Squad
Thursday, 2nd Feb 2017 14:13

Town boss Mick McCarthy is hopeful top scorer Tom Lawrence will be fit enough to face Reading at Portman Road on Saturday with the on-loan Leicester man’s ankle injury not a serious problem. The Blues manager confirmed that new winger Danny Rowe is over the hip flexor problem which ruled him out of the Derby match.

“He had a scan and it didn’t show that he’d got any lasting damage,” McCarthy said regarding Lawrence.

“It showed that he’d had damage before and that there was a bit of scar tissue in there and that was affected.

“But he’s come in this morning and he’s feeling all right, so fingers crossed he’ll be fine.”

But the Town boss says he’ll not risk the 23-year-old Wales international if there is a doubt about his fitness: “We’ve a duty of care to him as much as anything. He’s been great for us. We use him, we can’t abuse him.”

Regarding Rowe, he added: “He’s fine, he hadn’t trained for two and a half weeks, he’s kind of behind it a little bit. But he looked sharp and bright and I’m delighted he’s in here.”

McCarthy added Reading striker Dominic Samuel and Cardiff midfielder Emyr Huws on loan on deadline day and he says both moves could potentially become permanent switches.

“Possibly,” he said. “Emyr Huws is a player of a real quality and he was of real promise when he was at Manchester City and he’s had a number of loan deals.

“He went to Cardiff and Neil Warnock picked and prepared his first team when Emyr was away on international duty and prepared his team and they’ve done all right since and he’s never got back in. He’s trained today and he’s trained really well.

“Dominic Samuel, he’s certainly got something, just watching him on training today, he’s got goals in him. He hits the target when he gets in, he was bright, he did well this morning.”

Samuel is ineligible against his parent club on Saturday but McCarthy says Huws will be in the squad from which he will pick his matchday 18.

Myles Kenlock remains out with his calf problem but isn't too far away from a return to action, while Tommy Smith is expected to play for the U23s next week having returned to training after his back operation.

Still sidelined are Adam Webster (ankle), Jonny Williams (shoulder), Luke Hyam and Giles Coke (both knee).

Another 15,000 (10k) bumper crowd to watch another inept display. At the moment it seems regardless of who plays we find it difficult to score let alone win

Have the club announced that there is a confirmed option to buy on the deals that we could take up if they do well?

Because when it was first announced it just sounded like both were loans to the end of the season. I wouldn't be as against these deals if there were these in place because then we would at least have the prospect of them coming in, at the moment it feels like we are developing other teams players for them to go back and play there next year.

Let's see them make some difference now they've been talked up a bit, and if they do well, and there's a chance of making the moves permanent, be realistic with the numbers and get the deals done nice and early. Then you don't have to make so many excuses.

God knows where we would be without Lawrence and Bart!

Best mate is a Cardiff fan and says Huws is a quality signing for us and he doesn't get why they haven't been playing him, but even so, I'm sure Mick will find a way to take all the potential out of him!

What about the Lad on loan from Leeds, he did not play against Derby, is he fit or injured

I have a £5 bet with a Newcastle fan that I work with.

He said Taylor is a good player but very good with his hands and injury prone,

The bet is he will be sent off or have a long term injury.

Don't know a thing about Rowe so cannot comment but I have watched Emyr Huws play a number of times for Wales & he is a solid central midfielder with a decent long range shot & pass in him..personally i'd like to see us bring him in permanently if Mick or the next manager can get the best out of him..so much better than what we currently have.

Anyone know when Hyam is due back?..he may not be the greatest midfielder we've ever had but we've missed his energy & enthusiasm in the middle of the pitch more than we realise.

Generally I'm pleased with the new additions, obviously putting the lack of investment to one side, which I do kind of understand in our current situation.
If 2/3 of the new players make the grade for next season then we can say the January window was a generally a success.

Give the guys a chance BUT I really think we are onto a bigger hammering than Tuesday,
The system was wrong against derby and not changed till to late. need 4 at the back with Emanuel at right back. Off load kunso absolutely out classed, berra a joke, o and whos going to score certainly not mcgoldrick, put sears as an out and out striker give the lad a chance. O and we cant go two games without douglas and skuse being together at some point and well it will be the same old crap whoever plays.

We're going to need Mo Farah because Reading are likely to have about 75% of the possession so going to be some very tired legs. Certainly not a suitable game for Douglas, although I'm not sure what is. Apart from the veterans league!

How bad is this team/squad, the same one MM said was the best he had in his time at Town, that it can be improved by players;
- who cannot get into other Championship sides
- dislodging OUR players from the match day squad
- creating even more uncertainty in our play.

These are moves of desperation, which is apt as we are in a desperate position....or will be within 3 weeks, unless Mick gets lucky and players gel quicker than they should.

Honestly believe that unless we get Tommy Smith back then relegation is a real prospect now, and having been outplayed twice by a non-League side, who would argue we would be better suited to League 1 if that did happen.

Off the subject a bit,but I wonder what rediculas spin the club has lined up
for the season ticket renewal letters, which will be arriving quite soon.
Will be interesting to say the least.

Great news about Lawrence, but what a sad state of affairs when we are so heavily reliant on a Leicester player who won't be with us next season.

I know most of us have moaned about loans at some point or other and yes when they become permanant like Murph and Didz its great. But tom lawrence won't be here next year. We had Fraser the year before terrific but not ours. We've had it with jonny williams and even gio all great cameos but just wish our key players were our own. Rant over. Come on the lads on Saturday!!

I notice the majority of the down arrows come from people who can't be bothered to actually write a post with their views/arguments,they just sit there hitting down arrows ..how sad.

Must not be tempted to play either of them from the off in my opinion. On the bench perhaps.

He did this with Ryan Fraser last year, who was our star man last season,as Tom Lawrence is this. The Dino started him after an injury, didn't sub him;so he broke down in the 90th minute, and don't think he played for us much after that,if at all.

Added to which he is obviously a marked man,as he was on Tuesday.Same thing happened with Jonny Williams.

Just saying
