Huws: Pay Cut Not a Big Deal
Wednesday, 8th Feb 2017 17:00

Town loanee Emyr Huws has played down his decision to take a pay cut in order to push through his move from Cardiff until the end of the season.

Huws, who caught the eye on his debut in last week’s 2-2 home draw with third-placed Reading, said: “The first half of the season didn’t go my way — I hardly played any games — so I was keen to come here.

“I’ve admired the manager for a while so when I knew he was interested in me I was just pushing to try and get the deal done. A pay cut had to be done but I don’t see it as that much of a big deal.

“I’ve spent a lot of my career not playing so I was desperate to play — and to play with my friends, Jonny Williams and Tom Lawrence, was a real pull. The money wasn’t a factor for me and I’m really happy to be here.

“Everyone wants to play and hopefully, as I move forward in my career, I can continue to do that here.”

Huws was just seven when he entered Swansea’s academy, but he later came to the attention of Manchester City and was persuaded to join them when he was 14. Since then he has trained and played alongside modern-day giants of football like Sergio Aguero and Gareth Bale.

It was in his time at the Etihad Stadium that he trained alongside Argentine striker Aguero and other household names, while he is an international colleague of Real Madrid’s Bale.

Huws, who captained City’s U21 side, said: “It was a good experience for me at City — a massive club where I played with some really good players — but I had to move on to get first team football. But looking back I can see how good it was for me.

“I trained with the City first team squad a fair bit, top players like Aguero, and I learned a lot from them. It all helped to improve my game.

“When you train with players of that ability you see little bits that they do and you think ‘I need to integrate that into my game’. It was good to train with those boys.

“Training and playing with the likes of Gareth Bale is also a big thing when you think how far he has gone in his career. You try to compare yourself and you should always be looking to improve. Hopefully I’ll continue to do that.”

First game he certainly impressed, so hopefully that continues and we manage to tie up a deal to keep him permanently. Whether this pay cut thing would then be a problem at all, I guess we'd have to wait and see...

It may not be a big deal for him, but shows Marcus Evans true co,ours. I think it's very poor that we are not paying the lad his full wages.

I like Huws already. The fact he took a pay cut says it all.

Great to know he has played with Lawrence and Williams. He certainly put a great pass through to Tom last Saturday. Long may he continue to play that well.

Jas, you don't know what he was on at Cardiff. They shelled out 2.5 million for him, what they thought was an up and comming star of tge future, they really wanted the move and put together a package accordingly.

We on the other hand were signing a someone unproven at this level, who hardly kicked a ball all season. Think that's harsh on Evans personally.

Thus far I really like this lad though. Hope Cardiff are wrong and he can reignite his career here but suspect if he plays well he might play more for the boyos next year

It's not just about Marcus Evans not paying the lad his full wage. It's often the case that loan clubs pay a contribution to the wages - Cardiff could have chosen to top it up to the full amount but haven't.

Wow, a player who puts playing before salary. That's a refreshing change. Well done lad!

Jas0999. This just shows that u will use anythanything to slag off Evans. The facts are that when a player is on loan he is entitled to his full wages. It's justva case of the 2 clubs agreeing to what percentage each club will pay. Think you'll find that it was the Cardiff end that he's taken the pay cut. Not ours.

Really confused here. We may be paying a %%%% of his wages, but Cardiff would have to stump up whatever we don't so I cannot see this being true.

you pay a percentage of a players wages when you take him on loan.

Or you pay a fee and agree wages with the player separately

Why is it always the same sh!t? We have an owner who should be investing. We have made money from player sales yet all our signings are bloody loanees. The issue isn't MM, it's Marcus Evans. Get Evans out and get an owner who will actually invest. I travel down from Wolverhampton at least once a month to watch my team yet the owner can't match the same passion us fans have. After the Wolves game I won't be doing that 320 mile round trip again until ME goes or coughs up.
