Coke to Be Released
Wednesday, 1st Mar 2017 13:41

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that midfielder Giles Coke will be released at the end of the season, the 30-year-old having missed the whole of the campaign with knee problems which have required a number of operations.

“He’s injured, he won’t be involved and he’ll be released at the end of the season,” McCarthy said.

Coke joined the Blues on a free transfer in the summer of 2015 after being released by Sheffield Wednesday having impressed during a trial, but made only four starts - one in the Championship - and nine sub appearances during 2015/16 without scoring.

No big surprise there. Has really been a case of Coke Zero, in that he's given us nothing since being here really.
All the best to him, but was a poor signing that didn't work out.

Seemed a poor signing at the time - an ageing lower league journeyman with a poor injury record. And so it proved. Was on the pitch so rarely that we'll never know if he might have added anything.

Thank god for that, always the worry that he might make it into the squad.

A shame it hasn't worked out, he seemed a decent bloke at the London ITFCSC Q&A. Down to earth and not like your averagd modern footballer. Admittedly you need a few bas**rds in your team but you need some balance too.

These fringe signings have been a bit of a disaster.

Pay as you play needs to be more prevalent.

How much has he cost us in wages then I wonder, this was one of a few of Micks stubbornness signings....he's not good enough but Mick seems to think he knows different..

You know what best of luck to him. I remember when he joined some Sheff Weds fans i know told me they always liked him and have his all. Bearing in mind how dire Jonny Douglass has been in CM would a fit Coke have been any worse? Who knows. Suppose him and Leon Best can boost he pension pot until the summer!

Mick has made some poor signings, mainly of fringe players;but this is balanced out by the good ones he has taken on.

Ranks alongside Piotr Malarcyk,Larsen Toure and Leon Best I feel;although the Pole cost £8500 the other two were free;but they were still paid wages.

Been following Town for a long while;so it is difficult to remember all the players, especially the duffers;but think the worst was Mark Fish who was so bad, subbed at half time, and never played anymore.Similarly Ulrich le Pen;but he was injured like Giles.Think the Frenchman would have been an asset if fit, especially in this division.

I wish a Giles the best for the future, but he was a low quality cheap free transfer. Proof that you need better than Coke and Toure.

Well at least we now know that Mick has been kinda forced into this kind of gamble by his budget. I said at the time and am saying now Coke Toure and Douglas terrible signings that came about by lack of funds.
