Huws: Time to Start Turning Draws Into Wins
Monday, 6th Mar 2017 06:00

Blues goalscorer Emyr Huws says Town need to turn their draws into wins, starting with Tuesday’s home game against fourth-bottom Wolves.

The Blues are unbeaten in six but have won only one of their last 10 fixtures in all competitions and have drawn their last four games 1-1, the first time in the club's history that more than three successive matches have ended in the same scoreline.

The last time Town recorded four successive draws of any scoreline was back in the 1992/93 Premier League campaign during an overall run of five. The longest run in the club's history is seven in November and December 1990.

‘We were unlucky not to win some of those earlier games so there is not too much different needed,” on-loan Cardiff man Huws said after Saturday’s latest 1-1 stalemate against Brentford. “We just need a bit of luck and to be a bit more clinical.

“We just need to keep on with these sort of performances and wins will come. Tuesday against Wolves is a good time to start turning those draws into wins.

“We are confident if we can keep putting in the performances the wins will come.”

He added: “Every game is a big game, not getting beaten is not to be sniffed in this league and we want to stay unbeaten.”

Huws, who manager Mick McCarthy revealed after Saturday’s match has told him he’d be keen to join the Blues permanently in the summer, netted his second goal of his spell against the Bees - his first was the winner at Aston Villa - and says he’s looking to add more to his total.

“I’d like to score more and I would like to build on the couple I have,” the 23-year-old Wales international continued. “Ipswich play a 5-3-2 and are quite expansive so that suits my style.”

Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers, who created his side’s equaliser for Nico Yennaris, felt the Bees should have claimed all three points.

“We created enough chances to win the game,” he insisted. “It was not an easy pitch and they are a very physical team but we battled and could put our stamp on the game with our passing.

“If we continue to battle in every game like we did then we will be more than all right.

“The gaffer bangs on about consistency and performances and we are starting to do that.”

He added: “We gave a cheap goal against the run of play but we bounced back and got our goal to get a good point.

“We are maturing as a team and growing in this league and if we keep getting these performances right we will only get stronger.”

Meanwhile Town’s U18s were beaten 3-2 by Sheffield Wednesday at their Middlewood training ground on Saturday morning.

The Blues’ U23s, who are expected to include Jonny Williams as he makes his return from his shoulder injury, are in action against Bristol City at Playford Road this afternoon (KO 1pm).

It's more of the case of turning defeats into draws, specially based on saturdays performance!!!!.
No such thing as a bad point though, errrr or is that when you play away???.

My worry is that the team knows how to dig in and get a result, as proved over the last month in those tough fixtures, but will not be so good at winning the games which are easier on paper. So often we are outplayed at home. This goes back to the key disappointment of fans to see exciting, free flowing football at Portman Road. Can we do it? We need to demonstrate it home to Wolves, Birmingham and Wigan if we want to sell season tickets.

Fast flowing attacking football is what we all want, nothing less.🤔.We don't just want excuses from players.!! It all starts with management.!

If we are "expansive," then I wonder what a defensive-minded team looks like. We obviously need a goal threat, but this costs money. We had a target-man in Murphy and that worked ok, but since then we've been lacking any real focus up front. Can't see how this will change unless we are willing to shell out some money. As far as I know, none of our promising youngsters fill this role.

Think we need a better central 3 in defence. Failing to hold onto a lead seems to be too regular at the moment. Midfield is alot better. Perhaps Benyu would be a good addition now. Up front we must a sign a goalscorer this summer.

Wow 7 defenders and clinging on at home against the might and power of Brentford. I feel so proud of this once great club.

Couldn't agree more that we should turn draws into wins. The team is more or less what we want it to be so it's down to the players as well as MM. On another point, can someone tell me what is wrong with the pitch ? Even our own players are saying it's soft but it looks ok to me.

It's probably full of moss. I suspect this is down to yet more evidence of Evans reduced financial input. He's already cut the non playing staff to the bare bones. So why would general maintenence costs command any high priority.

Putting aside the expected player PR-speak I like Huws - shows some strength, skill and awareness - unlike some of our current squad.
Sign him up!

2 wins in 13 this year. 19th in the championship for form. yes we need to turn draws and loses into wins. waste of space stating the obvious

NSS. A win is always unlikely with Skuse in the team : replacing him with no-one would improve our chances.

Pitch quality used to be one of our strengths. It did break up Brentford's play though, and made it much more difficult for them to play their fluid, one touch passing play.

I agree with ArnieM, we do seem to be lacking in general investment across the board.

Yawn...more spiel, it usually comes from the goalscorer from the previous game, getting quite tiring now. As a previous poster mentioned stating the obvious.

More spin different player different day same outcome. MM stop playing your favorites even when carrying injuries.

You've got to have money to compete these days. If you look at the link you'll be able to compare us with others in the Championship (3 tables. Click 'next' to view). The best manager in the world would have difficulty with the players we can afford.

Kikapu. Thanks for the info. Shows why we are in the predicament we are. Even Rotheram have spent more on players than us although I suspect if we included wages and rehab costs for the huge number of loanees we have had it would be different. I wonder how much we have payed Joniesta per playing minute????
