McGoldrick Out of Irish Squad Monday, 20th Mar 2017 08:13 Town striker David McGoldrick has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifier with Wales and their friendly against Iceland during the international break due to a knee injury. McGoldrick, who has won five full caps, so far without scoring, was subbed 12 minutes from the end of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Cardiff City, although not appearing to be suffering a serious knock. The 29-year-old was named in the provisional 39-man squad but the FAI has confirmed that he is not in the final party of 28, the injury having forced him out. Ireland take on the Welsh, whose squad includes Blues loanee Tom Lawrence, who himself could miss out as he is to undergo a scan on a groin problem, on Friday 24th March and then the Icelanders four days later, both at the Aviva Stadium. Town have a number of other players away on international duty in addition to Lawrence. Christophe Berra is with Scotland, Kevin Bru with Mauritius, Tommy Smith with New Zealand, although Blues youngster Monty Patterson has been ruled out of the All Whites squad, and Andre Dozzell and Tristan Nydam with the England U18s. Meanwhile, Town's U23s are in action against Crewe Alexandra at Portman Road this evening (KO 7pm). Blues boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that defender Steven Taylor will play as he works his way back after his hamstring injury, while Jonny Williams may also be involved having returned to training after suffering a minor hamstring problem of his own while playing for Gerard Nash's side a fortnight ago. Town's U18s were beaten 2-0 by Leeds at Playford Road on Saturday morning.
