Town Among Clubs Linked With Dorking Winger
Wednesday, 29th Mar 2017 19:28

Town are reported to be one of a number of clubs to have shown interest in Dorking Wanderers winger Matt Briggs.

According to the Surrey Mirror, Portsmouth are leading the chase for the 20-year-old with the Blues, Stoke City, Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic also among the interested parties.

Briggs joined the Ryman Division One South side in the summer of 2015 having previously been with Wallsend, Gateshead and Dunston UTS. Prior to his spell with Dorking he was offered terms by Burnley and a trial by Blackburn.

Dorking chairman and manager Marc White has previously said he expects there to be a bidding war for Briggs, who is contracted until the summer of 2018, and says Portsmouth are currently the favourites for his signature.

"The interest in Briggs has been constant for the last four months and it's become very competitive," White said.

"Portsmouth is a club that ticks the boxes for Matt, as far as the history of the club, the amazing fanbase, the geographical location and also Paul Cook's history of giving non-league players a chance.

"Personally, I've also heard very good things about Paul Cook and the set up at Portsmouth but Dorking Wanderers are yet to have official discussions with Portsmouth about Briggs, but no doubt we will soon."

Other clubs interested, a bidding war...we have no chance!

If ITFC were seriously going to invest any money in players this season, they would have shouted about that in the season ticket packs. It's not going to happen.

My renewal came through today. Reasons why I won't be renewing included Portsmouth being a better attraction than Ipswich.

Says it all if a league 2 club is a better proposition than coming to ipswich town of the championship.

Dorking reportedly won't let him go for under £6.50.

So that's out of the running.

I'd say he'll only come here if Paul Cook is already here...

I'd be surprised if we attract any players who are any good, unless they are desperate for a deal I.e. No one else wants them. This club is in decline. Portsmouth are a better attraction.

Almost as if he'd get a better chance at a L2 club to play and one that is just 50 miles from his current club.

Still anything to bash the club Jas007 and it looked like Webster disagreed with you ;)

Another bl**dy winger who won't be allowed to attack and has to help out in defence, never to be seen again if you sign for a MM team. How many have we had now since MM has been manager? How many have been allowed to play as wingers?

I've lost ALL faith in my Club now. Marcus Evans couldn't catch a bloody cold, let alone a potential budding young player. We ( Evans) has NO interest in competing with other Clubs to secure the best players.

He has about as much intention of funding any manager at this Club as he has returning to Brazil to answers charges .

ITFC is DEAD under this owner and us far more to blame for the Club's demise than Mick McCarthy.

Typical ridiculous reaction on here to the fact that Pompey are a better attraction than Ipswich? Apparently they're also a better attraction thanStoke City then? A premier league club. If u read the story correctly before just using any story to slag off the owner, youll see that one of the main attractions for him is the locality of Portsmouth for him. And anyway, this is merely a story in a local paper so prob no truth in it anyway.

Spot on ArnieM
We can all sit here and slate McCarthy for his boring/negative football, poor tactics, arrogant comments but the buck starts and finishes with EVANS!!! 1.3 million or whatever pitiful amount he has invested in playing staff in 4 YEARS!! Disgraceful!! I'm all for a change in manager but with this man as an owner I see a bleak future! Who else would work on a budget like micks been given? All these lower league players we are signing are not improving our squad (the lad Moore looks a real donkey.. frank nouble esque) and put together with ageing players I unfortunately can see us waving goodbye to the championship.. if not this season but next into the 3rd tier of English football.. Evans our future lies in your hands!!! Ipswich 'fan' aren't you?? Who else with billions would let their club demise how you have done? SORT IT!!!

Why this fixation with wingers??? Muck wont play them if they go over the halfway line anyway.

For the benefit of this lad, I would actually suggest him NOT to come here if the manager is still here. You'll be left to rot, or taken all the footballing sense out of you by our top class manager...

@intercept12 - interesting use of words. Paul Cook's name has come up a few times as a replacement for McCarthy and some of the sponsors have been told we will look for a 'Paul Cook-type manager should McCarthy leave'. Some sponsors have even said it's a done deal with a pre-contract agreed.

I know players have a reputation of being not-so-bright, but even they must surely check out sites like this when considering a Club. Who would read what is posted on TWTD and come anywhere near our Club right now unless we offer significantly more money than another Club ? No one of any worth or capability.....obvious really. Let alone a winger after the way he has treated other so-called wingers in past 3 years.

Culture, attitude and therefore the management needs to change. Mick will believe he can change, but with every day that passes less of us fans believe it to be possible or let alone preferable. A CHANGE IS GONNA COME !

According to a POrtsmouth fan of my virtual acquaintance, "this season he [Paul Cook] has turned into a sullen, snarky, moody being - snappy and rude to the local media; often bemoaning the 'pressure' and 'expectation' of fans. After one defeat he essentially said "I played 4-4-2 like the fans here demand, maybe now they'll see why I'm the manager"." A perfect replacement for McCarthy, then.

Meanwhile, I'm intrigued by this line in the Briggs story "Prior to his spell with Dorking he was offered terms by Burnley". That's quite a career move.

I put £5.00 at very good odds in December that Paul Cook would be here for the new season. So keeping fingers crossed. Could be wrong but don't mind losing a fiver as long as the incumbent has gone.

I know a few Pompey fans and the consensus is that they don't particularly rate Paul cook. Even if they are promoted, they can see someone else coming in as they don't see him as a long term manager.

I saw an old boy kicking a ball around on the park recently : he only had one leg and won't see 80 again, but it struck me that he was still likely to have more of a positive influence on our play than Cole Skuse, and he would be cheap, so he must be worth a go ; always assuming that Coventry City don't get there first ...
