Skuse Out But Welsh International Trio All Training
Monday, 3rd Apr 2017 13:28

Midfielder Cole Skuse will miss Tuesday’s home game with Wigan due to the concussion he suffered during the first half of Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Birmingham, but Emyr Huws and Jonny Williams are both available for selection and top scorer and fellow Wales international Tom Lawrence is closing in on his return.

“He can’t play on Tuesday because he was concussed but providing all his symptoms are clear he should be alright for Fulham on Saturday,” manager Mick McCarthy said regarding Skuse.

Jonathan Douglas controversially came back into the team on Saturday having not played since January.

Quizzed on whether the 35-year-old would be able to be selected to start two games in four days, McCarthy said: “Do you think I should? I thought he was very good and I watched it again this morning and he was probably our best player.

“Wardy got the man of the match because he scored the goal but he kept going and stuck at it.

“It was a game I needed to play him in and I wanted to play him on and I wanted to play him in because of circumstances and I thought he did well.

“As for getting two games out of him Saturday and Tuesday having not played, I’m not sure.

“I don’t know, he’s a lesson to all professionals actually. We’ve got some that if I’d played them they’d have been coming off after 70 minutes but he got through it and did a bit more, he was terrific.”

Regarding the Blues’ three Wales international loanees, he added: “They’ve all trained today. Admittedly Tom’s only had one training session today, so we’ll see how he feels tomorrow, you never know. You can do all the rehabbing and then you train with the lads and that can be different.

“Jonny Williams had been poorly and missed Saturday but he’s trained on Sunday and Monday, so he’s OK and Emyr’s had four or five days’ training now, so he’s all right to be selected.”

McCarthy says Kieffer Moore has missed out on a place in the 18 in recent games as he has had other options, while he says he has no plans to recall Kundai Benyu from his loan at Aldershot, despite Skuse’s absence.

The Blues boss confirmed that Tommy Smith was omitted from Saturday’s squad as he only arrived back at Heathrow from international duty with New Zealand on Friday afternoon.

Teddy Bishop is playing for the U23s this afternoon following his groin injury, while Adam Webster and Luke Hyam (both ankle) and Giles Coke (knee) remain sidelined.

@AYACCA

Why oh why post that team... we would rip the championship to shreds with that line up. The Rolls, one of my all time favorites. I was at that Southampton game when he was sublime and then the tennis balls, truly great days.

though not obviously now as they are all as old as me... but then, compared to saturdays line up I wouldn't like to bet on the outcome!

Personally I feel sorry for Douglas - not his fault that he's 3 years past his best - McCarthy throwing him into the team Saturday, well he may aswell have dropped him into a pool of piranha.

Skuse on the other hand - any chance of him missing the rest of his town career with concussion?

Tomorrow's game has a Wigan win written all over it! That's not being defeatist, that's just acknowledging the facts so far! Crap most of the time, but particularly when we're at home against supposedly lesser opposition and Monotonous Micks bizarre team selections. After the Rotherham result at the weekend you would have thought our chances of survival were heightened, but unfortunately we have to play them which will undoubtedly result in us being given a footballing master class! In Mick we trust...............NOT!

Is it true that when Skuse & Douglas both start our win ratio is 0% ?
If so, i can't fathom why would Mm wilfully start them both.
Even Douglas & Diagouraga would make more sense.
Or If MM intimates that he was the "best player", why not play him in his best position, (i.e. AM)?

The worst part of that article is Mick saying Skuse will be ok for Saturday(so that is him back come hell or high water!!!!!) it does not matter a jot how the midfield performs v Wigan(we did great in Feb when Skuse was out) someone will make way for the best midfielder in the football league!!!!! no wonder we are in the sh1t

Wouln't be surprised if this wind up merchant plays his mate, and Saturdays man of the match according to the Dino. Why because Dougie is a real bloke, whatever that means?

Personally I should like to see all the three Welsh boys play together, but fear that I am 'pi...ng in the wind'

With Skuse out there is an argument - not a very strong one - that Dougies should start. He shouldn't under any circumstances start alongside Skuse. He is also past his best sadly.

Any football manager with our squad would play 4-4-2 tomorrow. They'd also pick Huws and Williams in central midfield, Lawrence and Ward out wide, Didz and Sears up top. They would also play Kenlock at left back rather than Knudsen. Any football manager other than MM that is.

Just saw Hyam is injured so we could risk it and go with Diagouraga up front - he's a bit forward playing for my liking but he can always track back with Spence, Knudson, Douglas and Skuse when needed.
