McCarthy Annoyed By Rotherham Defeat
Saturday, 22nd Apr 2017 18:15

Town boss Mick McCarthy was annoyed that his much-changed side failed to take their chances and conceded a poor goal and were beaten 1-0 away by Rotherham United.

“I’m annoyed that we’ve lost, that’s my assessment,” McCarthy said. “We got away with it because Gerks made a good save [from Danny Ward’s early penalty] and I said to them at half-time, we’d have had burning legs and burning lungs because they hadn’t all been playing.

“They’d got over that and in the second half I thought we were better and we made chances and I think we should have been in front, but we contrived to find another way to give a goal away.

“It was a good finish by him [Tom Adeyemi] in the end but it shouldn’t have got to that. I’m a bit miffed about it.

“It was difficult to get back into it because there wasn’t long left and they got a real kick out of it and they could sit back and they’ve got a fair bit of pace up front, to be fair to them. We didn’t take our chances and they kept doing us on the break.”

McCarthy felt his team gelled as the game progressed after Rotherham had had the better of the early stages.

“We had got beyond that at half-time,” he added. “OK, we lacked a bit of cohesion with the way we were passing it but I thought we started to get that in the first half and in the second half we did have it and we were better. But we didn’t take our chances when we got them and managed to give a goal away.”

Is that perhaps inevitable when there are so many changes to a team? “It’s not inevitable. It didn’t look inevitable until that goal went in. If we don’t take our chances, if we don’t score, don’t get beat, but we did.”

McCarthy cited January signing Danny Rowe’s performance as a plus to be taken from the match.

“We had three midfielders at the start and Toums, Bish and Doz didn’t dominate that, their lads in midfield coped with that,” he said.

“I changed it to 4-4-2 and I thought Dominic Samuel showed a bit at times but Danny Rowe I thought was a real bright spark out of all of it, a positive.

“He came and he had a slight knock, then he came in and he was impressing everybody. Then he got injured again.

“And for the last two or three weeks he has been great in training. I was that close to playing him at Burton, but it wasn’t a debut day that, at Burton, and as it turned out that proved to be right. Newcastle wasn’t either.

“Today was and he’ll be pleased with his debut, I think. I am, I’m certainly pleased with him, he’ll be a player for us.”

Regarding Andre Dozzell, he added: “He’s a good player Dozzer, I’m not sure we dictated that midfield even with the quality we had in it. But he’s got some lovely subtle touches and he’s developing.

“There lies the problem, he is developing, he’s not the finished article yet, but when he is he’ll be a very good player.”

Was it a difficult decision to make as many changes as he did? “For the reasons I gave on Thursday it was, but the other side of that it wasn’t because I wanted to give some of them a chance.

“They’ve travelled up and down the country most of those but have not had much game time, sometimes sat in the stand, sometimes sat in the stands, watched all the others play.

“It was their opportunity, albeit slightly unfair, I get that because there were nine changes. It’s like playing a League Cup tie.

“I wasn’t being disrespectful to Rotherham, not in any way, shape or form. I was being respectful to my team and my squad and giving them a game and pretty much for most of it it was even-stevens.

“But I should congratulate Warney [Rotherham manager Paul Warne], I’m pleased for him because it’s great for him, it’s done him a whole world of good, I would imagine, in terms of him getting the job, keeping the job and for positives for next season.”
"
McCarthy was pleased with Dean Gerken’s performance and penalty save: “There’s never a bad one, is there? It was a really good save, he’s a good keeper. He was ready to play.

“Bart has been brilliant this season, and pretty much a lot of that is down to Gerks because of the way they train, the way they work together. He gives him a lot to think about.

“He’s got to be on his toes, he’s got to play well, if he doesn’t Gerks comes in and he does that. He’s done nothing wrong, Gerks.

“He’s been pretty much a big part of how Bart’s played. And, of course, he’s come in and done well having not played in however long. He looked as if he’d played last week and the week before. He was very good.”

Millers boss Warne was pleased that his side had ended a run of 17 games without a victory, having been given the manager's job on a permanent basis earlier this month.

“It’s obviously nice to win a football match, it’s nice to keep a clean sheet, which is obviously important," he said.

“Ironically in the last four games since I’ve had the job, while the effort was there, I didn’t think we had as much quality as in the other three.

“I think that just shows what football’s like in the Championship. In the other games I think we deserved more points, we didn’t get them.

“Today, I’m not saying we didn’t deserve to win, but I could have seen the game go in any way.

“I’ve told the players I’m really proud of them the way they kept a clean sheet and got over the finishing line but I think they have to believe in themselves a bit more because they’ve got more to give.”

I liked the look of the team, with Dozzell and Bishop in the middle of the park. If only those players who played today gad had some more minutes under their belt, it could have been alot different. They're not to blame due to the loss, the manager is! MICK OUT!

I wanted to see youth given a chance, but nine changes was asking for a defeat given how poorly that sort of side always plays in the cup games. It's so hard to get a team to gel with so many changes. I would have preferred the same team as Newcastle, but with Emmanuel, Dozzell and Rowe coming into that side. Throwing a team together like today, not sure it benefits anyone really (except Rotherham and their fans).

Haha, love the bit where MM gives Gerken credit for Bialkowski's form.

agree with mark, too many changes, bishop, rowe and samuel would have been plenty for this one, but changing the entire midfield is not fair on anyone

Dozzell and Bishop should be integrated with the likes of Huws , Ward , Lawrence , Dis and Sears around them not a second rate reserve team of your poor signings MM then we could really see what they would be like , but you are only trying to prove picking Skuse and Douglas so many times was right are you not MM ?

How on earth do 35% of you still think he's the right manager for us on that poll? Don't you dare say 'because there's nobody else'. Is that a good enough reason?

Young players(I or 2 at a time) could and should have been given some game time 15-20 minutes during the season to get a feel for 1st team football not thrown in and played out of position today when they were hung out to dry!! this man is just impossible in every aspect of managing a football team he is so behind the times and has beggared our club big time!! PLEASE GO!!

McCarthy 9 changes is not "giving them a chance" its hanging them out to dry. "giving them a chance" is introducing a couple at a time playing them in their proper position and giving them a chance to intergrate but that wouldn't have suied your attempt to justify your poor past team selection and favouritism.

If we were relegated to League 1 we would really struggle to stay in that division , a major overhaul is required in the summer , our fringe players are not good enough so time to clear out anyone who is not up to the job and start building a squad to push for the play offs at least. Troubling times and not looking forward to next season unless funds are made available to the manager (whoever that will be!)

Terrible. Experimental team or not. To be the only team in the league not to beat Rotherham after 44 games is an absolute disgrace. Major overhaul required. The two lomas starting today should not be given deals.

If this is the attitude of our manager with 11 mins left "It was difficult to get back into it because there wasn't long left" then we're in real trouble!! Glad we didn't have that attitude at oakwell in 1996 with 5 mins to go still one of the best away games I've been to. If McCarthy can't motivate for the last 10 mins could he get Simon Milton to sit on the bench for that purpose I'm sure he'd have the same attitude as any other town fan that was at oakwell that day!!!

For the first time in your tenure Mr MCcarthy I will resort to your gutter language EFF OFF and take your Easter and Newcastle(meaningless) awards with you your inane and offensive contradictory drivel is beyond a joke and an insult to this great club.

How can he be annoyed when he picked the team?

Shocking to change 9 of the players from the team which won at Burton and against Newcastle. What did he expect? Why not try for 3 wins on the bounce and give the 700 travelling fans something to cheer about?

So we are the only team that Rotherham have got 4 points off this season.

The only good thing about today for me was that we were unable to go to the game. The first one we have missed for a couple of months. I am now £150 better off than I would have been!

@Durhamtownfan

It is laughable how the poll rose from 25% to 35% based on last Monday's result - too many fans obviously basing their decision on 1 game - and too many with their heads in the sand.

They like our owner need to wake up otherwise we're going to get lumbered with this numpty for another 3 years.

I'm sorry all.. I am not in the MM in brigade but clearly our younger/fringe players are not good enough!! Get your heads out your backsides and realise bishop and dozzell are not good enough AT THIS CURRENT MOMENT! Dozzell for me yes soon will be a good player for us with a manager who has an attacking mind set.. bishop for me.. attitude stinks.. clearly thinks he's better than he is and I doubt his injuries (jack whilsere sort) not big but money has to be spent this summer! Evans we deserve better.. look at Newcastle.. you could have that every week!! SORT IT OUT!!

Completely meaningless game for both teams today, much as I would like to see McCarthy gone I can see why he decided to give other squad players a game today just as he does in the cup competitions, just shows how weak we are and how improvements are needed in the summer, preferably without him as manager.

Pathetic McCarthy. 9 changes, why? After 3 wins in 4 why f*ck it all up? Fair enough give Dozzell and maybe Bish a run out, but we know Pitman is bang average, Samuel is a loanee, Rowe should be bedded in over pre season friendlies to ascertain whether he's good enough. Really poor judgement Mick. Should have made 2/3 changes, won the game and started to make us fans feel just a little bit happier about life after an awful season. Sears has scored 4 in 4 so why break his rhythm? Also, we had a genuine chance to try to finish in the top half and salvage some respectability. Pathetic.
