Digby, Robinson and Marsden Released
Thursday, 27th Apr 2017 14:24

Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that centre-halves Paul Digby and Joe Robinson, and goalkeeper Jacob Marsden will move on at the end of the season.

“We’ve an option on Diggers but I won’t be taking that up, Diggers will be leaving,” McCarthy said of the 22-year-old, who joined the Blues on a permanent basis on a free transfer from Barnsley last summer following a loan at the end of the previous season.

“He has had a lot of competition and he needs to go and play. There’s no point in him traipsing around sitting on the bench, sitting in the stand watching us, he needs to go and play some football.

“I think Diggers will have a career then somewhere but he’s not going to play in my first team if Chambo’s still here, which I’m certain he will be, because we’ll take up his option. And Tommy Smith and Webbo, he’s not going to play in front of them.”

In total, Digby made seven starts and five sub appearances for the Blues without scoring.

McCarthy, who has already told Jonathan Douglas, Leon Best and Giles Coke they’ll move on at the end of the season, says academy products Joe Robinson and Jacob Marsden will also be departing.

Robinson, 20, whose only first-team appearance for Town was as a sub in the FA Cup replay at Portsmouth last season, has recently been on loan at St Albans City.

Marsden, also 20, hasn’t been involved with the Blues at first-team level and spent much of this season on loan at Leiston.

“Joe’s moving on, Jacob Marsden will be moving on,” McCarthy added. “There are other decisions to be made as yet.”

The Town boss has previously said 21-year-old keeper Michael Crowe is likely to stay - “That’s the thought” - but that the Wales U21 international’s future is still to be firmed up, as is the case with the likes of New Zealand international Monty Patterson and Irish U18 international striker Shane McLoughlin.

“All those are to be dealt with, Michael similarly to be dealt with and to make them an offer as much as anything," he added. "That doesn’t have to be done yet, their offers - in the case of most of them - don’t have to be in until the end of May.”

The situation is similar with the second-year academy scholars: “There are some decisions that have been made on some of them but I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head.”

We've certainly done well with the centre backs we've bought in Webster and Taylor, so can understand this. Will miss the nickname 'Diggers' though.

What poor signings Digby, Douglas, Best , Coke absolute waste of wages .

And TractorCam ..we have done well with centre back signings Webster arrived injured and missed over half the season through injury and Taylor cannot last a full game ?

Not surprised to see Project Digby abandoned.

Good luck to the lad, but didn't look like working out for him here almost from day one.

Sadly agree with MM that Digby is not up to the Championship standard at this stage. But I can see him making a career at a League 1 or 2 Club quite easily & then stepping up later on.
Hindsight of course being a wonderful thing - maybe it would have been better for Digby had he stayed at Barnsley & been a part of their recent promotion from League 1 & success this season in the Championship.....

Well if ever there was a message of 'finger on the pulse' and taking an individual approach with all the squad then this isn't it. If you're a youngster who is still waiting to hear whether you have a future at ITFC then I feel that is pretty poor from the club

@King_of_Portman_Rd - criticise Mick for his team selection and tactics/approach as much as you want. But implying he isn't good at man management is contrary to every piece of evidence coming out of the club. He protects players more than any manager I can remember since Robson. "Some decisions" implies that the decision hasn't been made yet - it doesn't imply the player is not in the loop. It's most likely that the coaches have had a detailed talk with the players and indicated required improvements, should the player achieve these a contract extension will be on the table, otherwise they would be advised to drop a division or two to develop.

Why is it that football managers are expected to divulge everything to their customers about the running of their organisation when it doesn't happen in any other business?

Digby, the biggest central midfielder in the world.
Sorry to see him go, purely for his name. Seemed a pointless signing at the time because he couldn't get in the Barnsley team so how was he going to improve playing in our U-21s?

First change needed McCarthy's departure.

Taking up the option on Berra in order to get a fee from Rangers or Hearts I suppose.
A back 3 of Chambers, Webster & Smith, with Spence and Kenlock as wing backs on either side, sounds like a decent defence ... especially if Bart is still behind them.

Surco, when fit both are clearly very good for this level, obviously Taylor does have history with injuries so we'll wait and see on him

If we are going to improve Mick needs to stop taking punts on guys who 'on the balance of probabilities' aren't going to make the grade. When we have a decent squad, why not take a punt, but don't build your squad up with rejects. If we are to improve we need to release Pitman and Douglas (maybe a few others) but it's more about bringing in 3 quality attacking midfielders (who can also play wide) and a proven goal scorer from league one or from Spanish, Italian, German 2nd tier if we can't afford to pay proper money. Mick has a huge job on his hands this summer. If Marcus doesn't back you financially Mick then tell the truth rather than hiding behind your love of frees and rejects.

In regards to Digby, it's another case of a cheap freebie not being good enough at this level. Needed better last summer. No change this.

To be fair to Mick, I assume he wouldn't have been the one having the conversations with the scholars and he actually went on to say he was keen to avoid mentioning the name of someone who hadn't been spoken to.
