Blues Reportedly Renew Interest in Woodrow and Watkins
Monday, 15th May 2017 12:35

Town are reported to be battling Burton Albion for the signature of Fulham striker Cauley Woodrow - who was linked with a loan move in January - and are said to be one of a number of clubs chasing long-term target Marley Watkins, who is a free agent having left Barnsley at the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mirror the Blues and Brewers are fighting it out for Woodrow, who spent the second half of 2016/17 on loan at the Pirelli Stadium.

The 22-year-old, who made only one start and four sub appearances in the Championship for the Cottagers prior to his switch, in addition to two goals in three starts in the EFL Cup, looks to be surplus to requirements at Craven Cottage despite having another year left on his contract, which also includes an option for a further season.

The 6ft ½in tall striker made 11 starts and three sub appearances for Burton and scored five goals.

Woodrow played youth football with Spurs, Buckhurst Hill and Luton - with whom he made his first three senior appearances as a sub in the FA Trophy - before joining the then-Premier League Whites in March 2011 for a fee which was set to hit seven figures after top-ups.

Having spent time out on loan with Southend in League Two, where he made 10 starts and 12 sub appearances, scoring four times, Hemel Hempstead-born Woodrow made his Premier League debut for Fulham in a 3-1 defeat at Cardiff in March 2014.

In total Woodrow has made 28 starts and 37 sub appearances for the Whites, scoring 12 goals.

Also according to the Daily Mirror, four Championship clubs, Town, Cardiff City, Bristol City and Wolves, are fighting it out for wide midfielder or striker Watkins. However, Premier League Burnley are also said to be keen.

The 26-year-old was the subject of a £1 million Town offer last summer with the Blues showing further interest in January.

Quizzed on whether he might make a renewed summer move for Watkins in March, Blues boss Mick McCarthy kept his cards typically close to his chest: “I don’t know. We’ll see, he’s out of contract.”

Meanwhile, former Town striker Daryl Murphy could be allowed to leave Newcastle United as part of a summer reshuffle at St James’ Park, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.

Murphy, 34, joined the Magpies from the Blues for £3 million last August, signing a two-year deal, and went on to score five goals in nine starts and nine sub appearances as the North-East club carried off the Championship title.

Some of us are more interested in who we might get rid of, MM being top of the list.

I, for one, want to see the back of Cole Skuse who is the absolute essence of the type of negative football that will keep ITFC in the lower half of The Championship at best. Sideways or backwards passing for a midfielder who has only scored one goal for us in 126 appearances - I ask you!!! Consider when our 'great' midfielders (Thysson, Beattie, Hamilton, Talbot, Elsworthy) could be banked on to score, on average, once in every 10 games or less, once in 126 games (none in the top division either) is nothing short of pathetic, And he's MM's first name on every team sheet!!!

So why is their never a mention that we're looking for a decent midfielder?

They say small steps to start with, and that has been the way in the last few years. Now is the time for big steps with sizeable transfer fees paid to fill the gaps of the players the club has finally seen sense to move out If you want success MM then get ME to open his cheque book and invest in quality to give everyone a lift. The payback will be attendances up and a side capable of pushing on to better days ahead. Plus Bart needs to be retained at all costs. The alternative is £10k signings and frees that will take ITFC nowhere but downwards.

More average Championship players, how exciting

I cannot believe how pathetic the so called fans of this club are, if the papers say tomorrow that MM was heading a group to buy Ipswich you would all believe it.
I see there are now comments asking for season ticket sales just so you can have another winge about how far our once great club has fallen. I remember the days when the old north stand were shouting Robson out but that happens at all clubs at some time over the years.
PLEASE PLEASE JUST WAIT UNTIL THE CLUB CONFIRM THINGS ARE TRUE BEFORE ACTING LIKE BIG KIDS YOU ARE ALL VERY BORING AND SHOULD NOT NOT BE CLASSED AS SUPPORTERS.

Woodrow - nope! Watkins - he's out of contract! (say no more). How on earth are we going to go forward with such like players in our sights and McCarthy staying on for another season to 'rebuild' - what is the point of doing this if another manager will come in after this so called 'rebuild' and then probably rebuild again! MM needs to go now get more season tickets sold and offset the cost of firing him!, the whole club is in a mess.

No doubt this will be one of numerous links that will be reported on over the coming weeks.
If there is any substance in it then the likes of Woodrow and Marley are not going to improve us.
We certainly need to invest heavier.
I would also say that whilst I very much like Huws and Spence, we should remember that they alone will not change our fortunes. They were part of our set up last season which let us down.
I am not saying for one minute they let us down just saying we need serious quality to join them.

No offence to Burton, but the fact that they are now our competion for transfers speaks volumes to the quality of players we are now chasing and just how far we've slipped in the pecking order under Evans.
The only transfer news Im intrested in is who will buy the club and when will Evan f**k off?

Hadn't really thought about the players we have bought Mick has seen usually playing against Ipswich;so a very good point ASA.

Not sure about Micks transfer policy;but like a lot of things he is involved with, not very adventurous to say the least.

Not sure what his two mates he brought with him from Wolves do as far as Scouting is concerned;but as one has the title of Chief Scout presume they look for potential players,as well as watching opposition teams?

Do Town look overseas, apart from Ireland, for talent?I think Mick has mentioned some site called 'You Scout' or something similar, which I presume touts players who want to move?

I know that Romeo Zondervan used to be our European Scout, although expect Marcus has done away with that like a lot of other things at Portman Rd.Do you know that the plastic knives are so flimsy they break when trying to eat a Portman Pie lol !!!.

Woodrow doesn't look the type of player who a so called promotion chasing side would go for. Watkins would be a decent squad player.

There is not one decent player with ambition who would join a negative shambles of a club that Town have become since Mick walked through the door, we are not geared up to progress only stagnate that's why the inept Skuse is first on the team sheet!! the great leaders attitude of before kick off is we have 0-0 now boys keep it has destroyed a once great footballing club that struck fear into all the top clubs in the country and has non league teams peeing all over us home and away thank you for ruining(on your undeserved huge salary) our club mr perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tony88 - why so much aggression . The point if this site is to give everyone the right to comment regardless of whether you like it or not. I too am interested to learn how season ticket sales are going. I dont get your angst and certainly its not so i can have a go. Its genuine interest. I think a person who resorts to accusing those who ask perfectly reasonable questions of acting like boring little kids should perhaps refrain from commenting until they learn some tolerance

I said we'd go back in for Murphy, just knew he'd be out the door once Newcastle get promoted.
What a waste.

Newcastle will spend big Murphy won't have a chance there now.

Please don't re-sign Murphy. 🙈🙈🙈

Well said Edmundo, It is the local media and this site who are as much to blame for our sad demise. They all seem to be afraid to voice a true opinion in case they are banned from the ground or Boring Billys foul mouthed press conferences. The plain fact is there will be NO money for players whatsoever. The wide boy who owns the club will not invest an extra penny because he is not here for football reasons, he only wants the club as a tax fiddle. Players will be sold to offset the drop in season ticket sales and all the media will do is wring their hands in frustration instead of organizing a meaningful protest. Very sad

I hate this time of the year. Rumours made up on social media. Even if they are true who cares until we sign anyone.
Have to agree with many on this site - the real story is anonymous owner, manager who won't change, no investment in team, over priced tickets & season ticket purchases down by 20%..

I love the club but it is hard to be positive. Luckily it's summertime but I worry what August will bring. In the meantime holidays for me on TWTD so best wishes to everyone until the new season.

COYB!

I have not had a good day and as soon as I started to read the same old negative comments I was painting everyone with the same brush and I apologise if my comments have upset anyone. That said I am quite sure as soon as the season ticket sales are announced you will see how many of the same old MM comments will appear (I also believe MM should go) but those foul mouthed ones are not necessary.

I think that a proven quality central midfielder to partner Huws is the top priority. That player should be able to break up play and provide forward momentum in place of Scuse who should be sold. With decent service to feet Sears and McG (when played in their best positions) are both well capable of putting the ball in the net. To bolster/compete with them every effort should be made to get Danny Ward, or failing him, Watkins.
Midfield options of Ward, Dozzel, Rowe (who could become very good for us in place of Lawrence), Huws, Benyu plus the new addition should provide some excitement and have other teams thinking about how to stop us rather than the other way around which has been the case for far too long. Securing Huws, the new midfielder referred to and Danny Ward (or Watkins) should provide change out of 4m which McCarthy alluded to as being available in January. I see that level of investment as being a realistic minimum to make progress next season.
