Departing Berra in Scotland Squad
Monday, 22nd May 2017 12:06

Departing Blues defender Christophe Berra has been named in the Scotland squad for their World Cup qualifier against England at Hampden Park on Saturday 10th June.

Berra, who has been capped 35 times, scoring three international goals, is currently still at Town player but will be leaving the club when his contract expires after June 30th.

The 32-year-old is keen to return to home to Scotland to be closer to his young daughter with the Blues having chosen not to take up an option to keep him for a further season.

Hearts, Berra’s hometown club where he started his career, are widely tipped to re-sign the centre-half, while Rangers have also been linked.

Former Blues loanee Ryan Fraser has also been included in Gordon Strachan's squad.

Meanwhile, ex-Town midfielder Sammy Moore has been named the new player-manager of Ryman League Premier Division Leatherhead replacing another former Blue, Jimmy Bullard.

Moore, 29, came through the Town academy and was a member of the 2005 FA Youth Cup-winning side but went on to make only one senior sub appearance for the Blues.

He spent time on loan at Brentford before moving on a free transfer to then-non-league Stevenage, prior to spells with Dover, AFC Wimbledon and Leyton Orient, during which time he had a further loan stint back at Dover.

Scotland: Craig Gordon (Celtic), Jack Hamilton (Heart of Midlothian), David Marshall (Hull City), "Allan McGregor (Hull City), Ikechi Anya (Derby County), Christophe Berra (Ipswich Town), Stephen Kingsley (Swansea City), Russell Martin (Norwich City), Charlie Mulgrew (Blackburn Rovers), Mark Reynolds (Aberdeen), Andrew Robertson (Hull City), Kieran Tierney (Celtic), Stuart Armstrong (Celtic), Barry Bannan (Sheffield Wednesday), Scott Brown (Celtic), Tom Cairney (Fulham), Darren Fletcher (West Bromwich Albion), Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth), James Forrest (Celtic), James McArthur (Crystal Palace), John McGinn (Hibernian), Kenny McLean (Aberdeen), James Morrison (West Bromwich Albion), Robert Snodgrass (West Ham United), Steven Fletcher (Sheffield Wednesday), Leigh Griffiths (Celtic), Chris Martin (Derby County), Jamie Murphy (Brighton and Hove Albion), Steven Naismith (Norwich City).

Fancy this to quite a tasty encounter. Although the standard of Scottish football is questionable, Celtic without doubt have some very good youngsters in Tiernay and Armstrong - Roberts is another. I think they'll give England a few problems at Hampden Park. What do others think?

We shouldn't underestimate them. They should give us a tougher game than we had at Wembley but we'll still be favourites. If this was a proper tournament match following qualification I'd be more worried (think Iceland!), but as it's a qualifier then we'll prob do what needs to be done. If we lose Southgate's honeymoon period will be well and truly over!

christiand- good of you to get a debate of sorts going, specially in these quiet times on TWTD.

The mere fact that Berra (no disrespect to him) is even being considered for the game just goes to show what a shocking state of affairs that Scottish football is in right now. Having recently worked with a load of 'proper Glaswegian', make no bones about it, they hate the English with a vengeance!! and despite the fact I followed them in the 78 World Cup Finals (I still remember that Gemmil goal), this has now become a two way street!!
Due to it being a qualifier probably means that it will be a nailed on win to us, I reckon 0.3. If it were say in a championship as Midas mentions, then it might be a different story and maybe a tad closer, although I would still fancy the win. So fear not, (assuming your English) even if our very own MM were to take them over with his hard to beat mentality and with his 8 at the back, I could not see the Scots getting anything out of this one!!

& the reason this is news is because there probably won't be much news to report on Town I expect till after the Algarve Classic golf tournament as that's usually when Mick and Marcus meet on the 18th tee to discuss transfer activity (or more like who to sell to plug the financial gap!) before each season.
If it's totally broken, time to fix it! :-)

I'm English cat, but I have admit that I do enjoy watching Scotland play. Strachan tries to get them to play in the right way. People forget, Scotland had chances at Wembley and didn't take them where England did. He just seems to be getting an influx of talented youngsters coming through, although this qualifying tournament might be a little too early. I really believe this going to be a close encounter - not the film!!!

The football season is far too long! World Cup qualifiers going on well into June. Then, it'll be straight back in for pre-season. Time to cull the bloated fixture list.
