UEFA Headache for League
UEFA Headache for League
Wednesday, 29th May 2002 12:52

Town's qualification for the UEFA Cup has given the Football League a fixture problem with regard to the Worthington Cup. As a Nationwide Division One club Town are due to enter the competition at the first round stage, however they could now begin their campaign in the second or even third round.

The Football League plan for eight clubs qualifying for Europe and give each of them byes from the third round. However, Town's participation could mean that another place has to be found.

At what stage Town start could depend upon the Intertoto Cup success of Aston Villa and Fulham. If they fail to qualify for the UEFA Cup via this route then the Blues are likely to get a bye to the third round with one side receiving a bye from the each of the first and second rounds of the competition.

A League spokesperson told TWTD today: "It has caused us a few problems and we won't know the outcome until later this week."
