Hurst: We May Have to Be Patient on Signings
Monday, 18th Jun 2018 16:39

Blues boss Paul Hurst, who officially took charge at Portman Road this morning, doesn’t expect to make any signings prior to the start of pre-season training.

The squad are due back at Playford Road on Friday for testing with pre-season preparations for 2018/19 getting under way in earnest next week.

“I think we’ll probably return with what we’ve got,” Hurst told iFollow Ipswich.

“With the step up I think we maybe have to be a little bit more patient in terms of bringing players in.

“There is also the World Cup and other England tournaments going on so straight away that impacts us.

“It means the situation might be a slow burner. Of course in an ideal world I’d have four or five lads in, I’d know what my squad is and I would know where we’re going but that’s very rarely the case in football.”

Hurst is believed to be keen to recruit defender Aristote Nsiala and midfielder Jon Nolan from his old club Shrewsbury, while he said at last week’s press conference that adding wingers to his squad is a priority.

Meanwhile, young Manchester United keeper Dean Henderson, who spent 2017/18 on loan with the Shrews and who might have been on Hurst’s list of potential targets should Bartosz Bialkowski move on over the summer, has joined Sheffield United on a season-loan loan.

It's Mickspeak!

As I've said Bluehook, all along, Hurst is Mick V2.0.

This isn't a bad thing but his appointment isn't a huge departure from what we had.

I'm sure some will jump all over this but given the circumstances it's fair enough. He needs to look at what we've got before making any wholesale changes. He has already stated we need wingers, and unlike Mick, he isn't full of hot air and came across very well during the first press conference and is certainly no mug. It's a new start and a new era, we need to trust him on this.

Or Paul Hurst speaks facts. He still hasn't seen the squad on the training pitch and we're off.

Surely we can give it until at least deadline day before we judge?

Scum have taken in £30 million odd in fees so far, be interested to see their outlay.

It does Sound all very familiar, but in fairness to Hurst he did only formally take over today! No real surprise that he will want to see the squad. Good to hear him mention four or five lads.

If there are positives to take from the McCarthy reign, he has left behind a fairly decent squad, there are youngsters looking to break through and of course returns from injury.
I happen to think that played the right way, we may not break into the top six but will see some entertaining football at PR.
Yes, a few signings wouldn't go a miss, but personally don't think there is a major panic?

Don't like the sound of this already. Again we are dithering over obvious needs. Deals should be done before pre season Full stop

Unbelievable.

New manager basically says 'I want to look at my new squad before deciding on transfers' and we immediately see a plethora of negative comments.

If the current group of midfielders can stay fit, then I think that's a good group. Yes, we need a centre back but let the guy at least sit down at his desk first.

Literally all he's said is that he'll look at signings after pre season has started.

Six hours into his new job and he realises we're basically broke :-) Yikes!!

Looks like we're doomed so, I mean what's this guy ever done with a small-ish club and a tiny budget?!

I've given it a good shake, and my only slightly-cloudy crystal ball is predicting a repeat of the double-whammy of the 1960-61/1961-62 seasons! Only this time, WITH wingers!! ;-)

Why don't some people think before writing negative comments. I don't know who they support but it is not Ipswich.

I'm sure we'd all like to see the cheque book opened and spend at will. However the guy hasn't met the players, has only just taken over surely its common sense to see what he's got to play with. I expect there's some work going on the identify targets.
Just give him time! COYB

Bright new era, but I'm reading the same old guff...

...from the news comments.

Seriously, guys, shut the hell up and at least let this guy warm his seat before you start kicking the back of the bloody thing.

If it be pep, Jose, mick or Paul hurst. We are fed the same old tosh. There is a common script the manager has to read for on. I give fans 18 months before fans want hurst out.

Like his honesty. It's evident that we have substantially managed to reduce the wage bill by a significant amount and we want to make sure we aren't losing money every season.

Unfortunately this is the problem with persevering with Mick for too long.
Should have been relieved of his duties after the Norwich fiasco and got Hurst here for the remainder of the season to assess the current squad ready for the transfer window opening. (He said he would have come even if Shrewsbury were promoted so would have come then). He now needs time to assess the current squad for himself, and that cannot start until Friday at the earliest.
Don't panic people, Paul Hurst is the right man to take this club forward.
He cannot afford to panic buy on something he does not need.
He has not had the 'luxury' of enduring the last 3 years of McCarthy football, so therfore needs to see for himself which of the current squad (on long term contracts) have a future here or elsewhere which will be dependant on them adapting to the new managers philosophy.

I've just had a word with myself, my first thought was "hold on, you've watched endless tv footage of games we've played, you must know what we need, bloody ME not releasing funds..".......Then it occurred to me that we've had four key players out through injury in the middle of the park which obviously he needs to see for himself when fully fit, it shouldn't have been difficult :)

....... reality has spoken.
Some may well be in for a few shocks, and a quick descent from the obvious 'hissy fits'.. !!

blueheartXT ...... is there really any need to be labelling people 'numbskulls' as early as this ??.
You've obviously lowered yourself to the previous Managers vocabulary - that seems to have rolled over from last season.

The negativity shown by some on here leaves me speechless, the true supporters will be wanting this to work and realise that blind negativity at this stage is harmful and will serve no good. Give the bloke a chance.
