Town Eyeing Shrews Defender Beckles
Thursday, 19th Jul 2018 12:36

TWTD understands Town are eyeing a move for defender Omar Beckles, who is currently with Paul Hurst’s former club Shrewsbury.

The 26-year-old is primarily a centre-half but spent much of last season playing at left-back in the absence of the injured Junior Brown.

Speaking on Saturday, Blues boss Hurst confirmed he was after two centre-halves following the departure of Adam Webster to Bristol City.

Blackpool’s Curtis Tilt was recently the subject of a £550,000 Town offer but the Seasiders are targeting a £1 million for the 26-year-old with Rangers now believed to be keen. Discussions between the clubs are understood to be continuing.

Hurst interest in his Shrewsbury players has been widely expected with another centre-half Toto Nsiala also believed to be someone the new Town manager has considered recruiting from the Shrews, while midfielder Jon Nolan has been linked on a number of occasions.

Having spent time with Millwall as a youngster, Leytonstone-born Beckles, who is contracted to the Shrews until the summer of 2020, joined the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain during which time he played for locally-based lower league side Jerez Industrial.

Spells back in English non-league with Boreham Wood (twice), Kettering, Billericay, Histon, Margate, AFC Hornchurch, St Albans City and Aldershot followed before he broke into the EFL with Accrington Stanley in 2016/17.

After one season in League Two Hurst took the 6ft 3in tall central defender up a division to Shrewsbury, where he made 43 starts and four sub appearances, scoring three goals as the Shropshire side reached the League One play-offs during 2018/19 having finished third.

He looked decent when watching him in the play offs - but was playing out of his primary position at LB.
Doubt he would cost much eiher...

Not a huge fan of this. He got absolutely hammered by Rotherham at Wembley and looked out of his depth on a big pitch in the playoff final. If Tilt is Hurst's first choice then we should stop messing about and bring him in.

Hurst has already stated the squad needs strengthening. It's now time to spend significant sums in improving it.

Whoever he brings in we need to give a chance. Clearly there's a reason these are the lads he wants.

Looked ok in the play off but played LB when he is mainly a CB

So hurts wants
2 CB
1 ST/CF (2 if Waggy goes)
1 LW/LM/RW/RM

Hope so as he still got £3.8ml left of Webster & Knight money.

Still think tilt could come (If we are prepared to play £1ml)

Let's see how the season goes before we judge hurst

No no no. I do have faith in Paul Hurst but not Omar Beckles. Looked very poor when watched on at least two of the three times I watched them play last year. In fact he got sent off in one.

Before we do basic math, will people ever realise - like this / hate this - we lose an absolute fortune a year, I think over £7 mill

You then have to factor in wages / signing on fees / agent fees / everything else

It's beyond lazy to say ' ahhh so Webster was sold for that so we've got that ' not how it works.

Are we looking at anybody with Championship experience?

Currie10, Agree to an extent, but we plan/budget to operate at a £6m loss every year, that is a given, so therefore I am not sure it is that unreasonable to think that some/most of the transfer fees coming in will be to replace key players we are losing?

I don't know anything about him, but if Hurst knows him and rates him that's enough for me! We desperately need two centre-backs.

We may have to offer his agent a bung(ay) though.

Really?

Come on Hurst you need to stretch yourself a bit more.

It's all well and good getting cheaper players from the lower leagues, but it's the players like Waghorn and Bart which will get us promoted. That is the standard.

All these cast offs may take time to adjust or may just flop.

Hardly any of MM's cast off signings cut it.

Look higher Hurst, even if you are short.

Hampstead - "Hardly any of MM's cast off signings cut it"

Presumably other than Bart, Waggy, plus Webster and Moore who were sold h significant profits you mean?

Agree muccletonjoe

Don't rate this Beckles guy after watching playoff final

@ Currie10 - Before you blow us away with you breath-taking mathematical ability, you need to realise that we paid Webster and other departing players wages too. Most people realise that when we sell a player we also save money on the wage budget. For simplicity say we assume incoming wages will not exceed outgoing wages, and thus forecast our spending money from our incoming transfer fees.

Currie10 , i on the other hand disagree .!! ME bought a football club and the associated costs (not debating that he covers cost,s) but nobody forced him to buy the club , but once bought he in my view a obligation to keep us competing at best , not to take incoming money and cover he costs that he signed up to , and lets be frank monies in have not been placed back into the squad over the years (Mings , Murphy , Ford - 12 / 13 mil there alone).

To get his money back the is only one way - promotion - and with his current investment levels - that ain,t going to happen anytime soon.!

ME has done a interview (10 years..!!!) , and hopefully appointed a decent manager who may take us forward / and he may not -But he bought the club so bears the responsibility for it towards the fans , and over covering losses imo he has come up short.

So we are linked with yet another lower league player who has been around that and the non league circuit. In fairness I know more about the town Beccles than the defender Beckles but this story hardly fills me with excitement. We do need to look at the lower leagues as there are bargains and some good players to be had but I would also like to see us linked with other Championship or even Premier League players struggling to oust some overpaid fancy Dan foreigner from their favoured position. If we could get such a player please make it a permanent signing and not another loan!

Another ordinary league 1 player

If he was getting the runaround at the Shrewsbury level he will be given even more of a runaround coming up against far better and more experienced players. So far the quality of the signings has been less than impressive, and I include chalobah in that as he has never played in a league as competitive as the championship. Hurst may have been a success at the levels he has been at but the championship is a lot more difficult and needs a different approach to the games . Results are not always possible with the attractive style of football , sometimes style has to be adapted to the needs of getting a good result .

Good to see you have such a definitive opinion of a player based on so much truly in-depth research.

Let's be fair to Beckles here, yes he had a poor game in the play off final but he was named in the Division 1 team of the year so he can't be no mug. Every player has an off day, unfortunately for him he was at fault for giving away a penalty in his biggest game of his life but I'm sure Hurst knows enough about him, he must rate him in front of Nsiala who I think is a very good CB!
