Town's qualification for the UEFA Cup has caused the Football League to introduce a preliminary round to the Worthington Cup. The Blues' start in the competition is still to be confirmed as it is dependent on the Avenir Beggen result and Villa and Fulham's Intertoto performances.

The preliminary round will see League new boys Boston take on last year's 91st place finishers Bristol Rovers for a place in round one.

As we reported some while back, Town will skip round one and could still get a bye to round three if neither Villa or Fulham qualify for the UEFA Cup through the Intertoto Cup and the Blues go through to the UEFA Cup proper by beating Avenir Beggen.

If none of Town, Villa or Fulham make it through to UEFA Cup round one then West Ham will take the eighth and final bye through to the Worthington Cup third round, the other seven places already taken by the UEFA Cup and Champions' League qualifiers

The draw for the first round takes place on Wednesday July 24th at 10am.
