Lambert: Good Battle Between Keepers
Tuesday, 25th Jun 2019 16:47

Blues boss Paul Lambert says the Town number one spot is up for grabs between Bartosz Bialkowski, whose move to Millwall has broken down, and new signing Tomas Holy.

“[Goalkeeper-coach] Jimmy [Walker] went to watch Tomas play a few times and I saw him myself last season,” Lambert told iFollow Ipswich.

“We knew that it was likely that we would have to look at the goalkeeper options for this season and we’re delighted to have got Tomas in.

“He has a great stature, a great presence about him and has played a lot of games in the league. It’s going to be a good battle between the two of them for the position.”

Bialkowski had seemed destined to join the Lions for a fee of around £1 million until the deal hit a snag due to a complication in his medical relating to his knee and, as things stand, that move won’t now happen.

“He’s here and fighting for the number one spot,” Lambert added. “You never know what can happen in football but he’s an Ipswich player, he’s a great pro and he’s here to play.”

If the Millwall switch were to be revived or another Championship club firms up their interest in Bialkowski, Town would almost certainly look for another senior keeper to battle Holy with QPR's Matt Ingram, who has joined Hull City, having interested the Blues earlier in the summer, while Bolton's Remi Matthews has been linked.

Have to feel a little for Tomas Holy. He probably signed thinking Bart was going and the number one spot was his to lose. The competition will be good, though.

Realistically Bart is still going, just not to Millwall. Indon't see that we'll be able to keep hold of him but I appreciate his professionalism and hope that a miracle does happen!

I'd rather keep Bart. He may be our highest earner but if he regains his form - which he began to show glimpses of towards the end of last season - then he earns you 10-15 points throughout the season with his saves.

10-15 points is a massive difference - be it an automatic promotion spot or sneaking a play off position.

A lot of our fans seem to think the transfer window has now closed... it isn't even open yet! Plenty of time for other clubs to come in for Bart, if he stays then great but that's still very unlikely.

The goal keepers are not the problem. Let's hope the defence lead by Captain calamity have left their errors back in the championship

Be nice if the defenders prevented our goal keepers from being required to work miracles! Bart was able to work miracles for successive seasons but you can't keep counting on such heroics to save you indefinitely. As soon as his form hit a bumpy patch we found ourselves rock bottom and it wasn't long before the rot had set in enough to ensure it was almost mission impossible to perform a great escape! I'm convinced that had Bart played like he did last season the season before we'd of gone down a season earlier! Hopefully the defence can get their act together in League One as they were well off the pace last season. In League One the defence should be aiming some weeks to virtually give the goal keeper the afternoon off!

Bart has done very well for us over the years but he needs to move on. I very much sensed his heart wasn't with us last season and although he is a true respected professional I cannot see how is heart could be with us this season either.
Could be that he stays though as the medical concern could put off other clubs potentially coming in for him.

Can we also have a good battle between defenders.....to include Chambo.
You only play if your bang up for it, on form and know one else is available with more ability.
This guaranteed starter situation hopefully left behind in the Championship

I'll be amazed if Bart is still here at the start of the season

Should start with Holy. Quick counter attacks from corners with his long throws. As good as Bart's shot stopping is, he is woeful with distribution and not great with claiming crosses. Corners against as could prove a gold mine if we play Holy for the upcoming season.

I imagine if he's failed a medical other clubs won't be coming in for him at all!

Let's not kid ourselves...Bart's a decent keeper no more no less which is why clubs are not queuing up to buy him. I hope he stays and fights for the number 1 jersey.
