Call-Up Problem for Town?
Call-Up Problem for Town?
Wednesday, 21st Aug 2002 10:39

Town could face playing a number of games this season without some of their international players if other top players leave the club. Unless the Blues have three players called-up for international weekends then matches which clash with European Championships qualifiers will go ahead as planned.

Currently Town have the required three players, Hermann Hreidarsson (Iceland), Matt Holland (Ireland) and Amir Karic (Slovenia), but with at least two of those looking as if they could leave in the near future, George Burley faces having to field a side without his remaining international player or players.

The Grimsby game on September 7th is the first match that may be affected while the Gillingham away game on March 29th and Sheffield Wednesday home match on October 12th also clash with international games.

One hope Town may have to avoid this problem is England U21 call-ups for either Darren Bent or Darren Ambrose.

Bent and fellow Academy player Matt Bloomfield have both been included in U19 squads before but these do not count as call-ups, according to the Football League.

Jim Magilton announced his international retirement in the summer and Dutch cap Martijn Reuser looks a long way from his national side at present.
