Yugoslav club FK Sartid are based in the Serbian town of Smederovo which is not far from Belgrade and is on the Danube.

The club is nicknamed the Despots due to Despot Djuradj Brankovic using the town as his capital from 1428 to 1430. It still has fortresses from this period.

The team came through the qualifying round of the UEFA Cup by beating Bangor Town 2-1 which suggests they may not prove the sternest of opposition for Town.

However, last season they played Dundee in the Intertoto Cup, beating the Scots 5-2 on aggregate, all the goals coming in the Yugoslav leg.

Sartid, who wear blue shirts, were founded in 1924 as the team of the Sartid factory, involved in the iron, steel and metallurgy business.

The side was traditionally a Serbian second division one until in 1992 when they started an upward ascent and in 1998 they entered the top division for the first time.

They are currently fourth in their league table after three games, having won two and drawn one so far this season.

They play at the "Sportski Kompleks Sartid" (that's not a joke) which holds 17,200 people in open stands, although other sources report that it has a capacity of 16,500.

Last season they finished third in their league and were beaten in their cup final by FK Crvena Zvezda.

British travellers to Yugoslavia require a visa and the Foreign Office advice on Serbia is currently: "The situation in Serbia is calm. However, travellers are advised to keep themselves informed of the latest developments."

Their keeper Dragan Zilic was recently included in their national squad while Dejan Kekezovic was in their U21s. Their captain is Goran Bogdanovic and their manager is Jovica Skoro.
