West Brom's chairman Jeremy Peace says Town central defender Hermann Hreidarsson came very close to joining the Albion towards the end of the transfer window but finally decided late on Friday that he wanted to stay with Town.

The Baggies chief says that the Icelander had been offered a contract which would have seen him at least match what he is on at Town and the two parties spent the end of last week negotiating: "I was told by the player's agent on Thursday morning it was no deal — but he then told me in the afternoon Hermann WAS interested in joining us.

"Negotiations continued overnight and into Friday — only for his agent to tell us on Friday night he WASN'T coming.

"We had further conversations on Saturday morning to try and do the deal - but it's just not happening."

"It's very disappointing. We've tried everything to get him here.

"Hermann would not have lost out financially and would have been playing Premiership football again."
