Give Me a Chance - Royle
Give Me a Chance - Royle

New Town manager Joe Royle has urged fans to give him a chance in his new job. Fans chanted their dissatisfaction at Royle's appointment during Saturday's loss to Gillingham.

The former Manchester City, Everton and Oldham manager is set to be formally announced as boss this afternoon and is looking forward to his new job: "I'm joining a smashing club with a great ground and fantastic fans."

"I don't know what I've done to upset them, I hope they'll give me a chance. That's all I ask. I'm sure we'll get on fine."

The 53-year-old says Town was one of a number of apppointments he has been considered for: "Since I left Manchester City I've had other offers, but it had to be right for me and Ipswich Town is right for me."

Despite the poor league position and lack of money he feels the squad is good enough: "This is the situation at present, but that doesn't bother me. There are great foundations here including a good base of players for me to work with.

"I know that there is little or no money to spend. The ground rules have been set out to me.

"I'm going into it with my eyes open and am looking forward to the challenge. I'm joining an ambitious club that has so much going for it."

As we reported last week, Willie Donachie is set to join Royle at Town, although at present he is still with Sheffield Wednesday.
