talks to John Scales

Those Were The Days have been fortunate enough to be one of the first to interview new signing, John Scales. Gavin Wilding called John up on a London-bound train (several times), and he told us how he first heard of interest from Ipswich Town:

“George Burley rang me, and we spoke about two weeks ago to find out what my situation was, and at the time I was speaking to Wimbledon. So we met up about a week ago/ten days. We got to a point where we agreed the contract this morning, and signed around lunchtime so that was great. Had the medical yesterday, it was fine. Obviously with the problems with the injury and everything else, they wanted to be sure I was fine. It was a rigorous medical, but it was fine.”

Besides Wimbledon, Portsmouth had also offered a contract to John, so how did he decide to join Ipswich? “Well there are a number of things, there’s the stature of the club, the league they’re playing in and the financial terms that are on offer. You take all those things into consideration, and Ipswich is the right move for me. I’m pleased to make this move. My heart was somewhat with Wimbledon, but Wimbledon are playing in the First Division and I want to play in the Premiership for as long as I possibly can. I’ve got a lot to offer the Premiership I feel, and can enhance the Ipswich team.”

It looks likely that Scales had been brought in to replace Tony Mowbray, but is that how John saw it? “I wouldn’t like to say. I’ll be a part of the squad and I’ve got to prove myself to the club. Tony Mowbray had a great season last year, and I’m sure he wants to continue playing, but he’ll feel that he’s competing for a place. He’s also player/coach so he has that role to play, but there are also other players that will be hoping for a place in the team.”

Ipswich are known for their passing football. Will that be play a part in keeping Ipswich in the Premiership? “We are under no illusions about the task ahead. If we play as a team, then I think there is every chance that we will still be here next year.” And of the system - does he have a preference? “No I don’t have a preference. I’ve played in both 5-3-2 and 4-4-2 and am happy with both.”

The first game is again Tottenham. “Yeah it’s a great start for me and the Club. Really looking forward to that one.” And Manchester United a few days later: “yeah. There is never an easy time to play Manchester United, and it’s a great day out for the fans”

We left John at this point to continue his journey home to London, a journey he will make many times as he commutes to us throughout the season. I am sure all Town fans wish John an injury free and successful season with Ipswich Town.
