The police are advising fans not to drive to Sunday's Portman Road derby between Ipswich Town and Norwich City. They are urging fans to utilise public transport instead.

Superintendent Mick Warden, who leads the 250-strong police operation, says that with the derby adding to the traffic caused by Christmas shoppers, parking will be at a premium: "It is my responsibility to ensure that those fans attending the game can do so safely and to prevent any crime and disorder.

"We are advising fans that as it is the last shopping Sunday before Christmas and with parking being at an absolute premium not to travel by car.

"Where possible supporters should use the special trains that have been laid on, come by coach or use other public transport. If these are not an option then please ensure you allow plenty of time for your journey so you can arrive early and park.

"The supporters of both clubs have established very good reputations across the country over the years for their good behaviour.

"Whilst there is always friendly rivalry between both sets of supporters during the year, the derby match does bring with it a higher level of passion, unfortunately for a small number of so-called supporters, both Ipswich and Norwich alike, this rivalry is taken too far with those being intent on causing disorder on the day.

"Our policing arrangements are intended to ensure everyone can attend this local derby in a safe, enjoyable and trouble free atmosphere."
