Johnson for England?
Johnson for England?
Tuesday, 24th Aug 1999 14:42

Former England and Town man Kevin Beattie has shocked football today by claiming that David Johnson is the man to play alongside Alan Shearer for England. Johnno has gone goal crazy so far this season, notching up five goals in his first four games. The 22-year-old has already made one appearance for the England B team as well as playing in a couple of friendlies for Jamaica and is in the squad for their game with the USA in September. Because he has never played in a competitive international match he is still available for selection for England and indeed, as a British passport holder born outside the British Isles, any of the other home countries. Whether Kevin Keegan will agree with his former England collegue that Johnson is "the nearest thing to Michael Owen -lightning-quick and capable of frightening the life out of defenders." remains to be seen.

Meanwhile Matt Holland has said that Town are in with a chance of winning the Worthington Cup. Having played in the side which came so close to the semi-finals two years ago Matt feels that Town are certainly in with a chance. Presumably a number of Premiership sides will field weakend squads and this could be to Town's advantage.
