Burley Hurt By Claims

Former Town boss George Burley says he has been hurt by claims that was drunk at Derby County training sessions. A national newspaper report on Tuesday alleged that a Derby official had asked four players to give evidence highlighting occasions when Burley had appeared drunk at training.

Burley strenously denies any wrongdoing and says he has been upset by the claims: "I'm deeply hurt, considering the amount of work and effort I have put in during the past two years trying to help turn the club around.

"For people to suggest otherwise is very disappointing. The team performed a minor miracle to reach the play-offs this season and the results speak for themselves."

The former Scotland international has been backed by defender Michael Johnson: "I have never seen the gaffer drunk at training or unable to perform his duties, so I'm not sure where all this is coming from.

"He has been out on the training field every day and the sessions have always been to a high standard.

"He has always been there for team talks and meetings as well.

"I'm not going to say he has never had a drink - we are all human beings and are allowed to go out and enjoy ourselves at certain times - but to suggest he has turned in drunk the next morning is nonsense."

Burley, who says he is considering his position due to various aspects of life at Pride Park, has been linked with the vacant manager's position at SPL side Hearts.

Derby have denied that they have launched an investigation.
