Broadhead
at 11:49 8 Jan 2024

I think this is almost certainly what's going to happen. McKenna's been easing Broadhead into the striker role for a couple of games now. It'll mean changing how we play slightly, but Sarmiento is a quality option who has come in to start.

Fine, but it'll cost 'em! The next Guardiola doesn't come cheap!

Is Broadhead still considered to be patchy?
at 10:37 27 Oct 2023

Broadhead is one of the most consistent, quality forwards I've seen at Portman Road since our last time in the Premier League. Anything but patchy to be honest. He's Premier League next season, with or without us. Just hope we can keep pace with his own personal trajectory.

I'd also consider utilising Broadhead as an out-and-out striker and freeing up another inside forward position for a quality new signing. I know how much McKenna enjoys a versatile forward player!

I reckon in January we'll bring in a top-top striker on loan (with a view to signing permanently if we make the Prem).

January
at 11:32 26 Oct 2023

You look at who our most influential players are now, and the likes of Broadhead and Hirst are right up there. So what we do in January isn't just about this season, but next.

With that in mind, fully expect to see someone recruited that is oven-ready for the Premier League, and if we have to spend money, we will.

I expect an exciting window.

What to expect from Plymouth on Saturday?
at 11:30 26 Oct 2023

Underestimate Plymouth at your peril!

They're playing far better than their league position suggests, and last night's 3-0 win was thoroughly deserved.

Their xG is 10th, their shots on target per game is 3rd, and now they're recently got Mike Cooper back, they've potentially even got the best goalkeeper in the division.

They're anything but relegation fodder.

We'll need to be BANG up for it to get anything.

Just a thought...
at 14:11 11 Oct 2023

We're in a great position - 8 points clear of third currently - way above where we ever imagined we'd be.

But realistically, what did we all hope for this season? Top half? Part of me always believed 6th was always achievable, but realistically I'd probably have said about 8th.

Well... hear me out! To finish 8th last season was 68 points...

That's an average of 1.48 points per game.

So what if we were now just to average 1.48 points per game from our remaining 35 games? That would mean 52 more points.

Add that to the 28 we currently have and you'd be looking at a final total of: 80 points.

Last season, that would have been enough to finish third, and at no point in the last decade would that have seen us fail to make the play-offs.

But who is the most likely to catch us? Leeds? Sunderland? Southampton?

Assuming we made it to 80 points, to catch us, they'd have to average the following points:

Leeds - 1.74
Sunderland - 1.74
Southampton - 1.80

All in all, not only do we need to have a huge drop off to finish outside the top two, but those teams need to seriously up their game.

Will both those variables happen? Who knows?

I really fancy us for top two.

Hope Leicester beat Preston tonight
at 14:25 4 Oct 2023

Agreed. I wouldn't worry about winning the title. If Leicester are in with a sniff of the title come January, they'll just drop £50m in the transfer market to guarantee themselves of it. Second would be a phenomenal achievement in its own right.

I will concede that Hladky may be a risk now
at 11:38 25 Sep 2023

I have absolutely no doubt that when Walton is ready, he should come back in because he's a Premier League goalkeeper. That's no slight on Hladky though. He's been excellent in his absence.

Wild speculation but …

I'd take promotion as soon as possible.

But then, if we did get beat every week in the Premier League, I'd expect our fans to be realistic given how far we would have come. Once you get into that Premier League money/parachute payments, you're in a whole new stratosphere of how you can build your team and what kind of player you can attract.

Well Played Mr Burns
at 15:47 14 Aug 2023

I think the problem some see with Burns is that for every decent cross he puts in, there's another one or two that go AWOL.

Aside from that, he's got a lot of brilliant attributes. I think if you combined all Burns' best attributes with a better end product, he'd have been a Premier League player for a number of years by now - not one we'd signed from Fleetwood for £500k and playing his first full Championship season at the age of 28/29.

So yes, he may well be one we upgrade in the next couple of seasons, but actually he's done very well for us and been a good servant to the club. That should be recognised, respected and applauded.

Glad to see him getting his chance at this level.

Seen a lot of people being quick to judge on here, but no one has any idea of what actually went on behind closed doors. They could have been having issues with their relationship for years and only now have they decided to part ways. Labelling someone a "certifiable scumbag" without the full facts, doesn't completely sit comfortably with me.

Player Values
at 12:34 31 Jul 2023

I think you've hit the nail on the head with this assessment. Totally understand why Luton wouldn't feel compelled to part with any more than £5m for him given that similar is available for less. But it's not worth the hassle of recruiting someone new for us, when, like you say, he's an absolutely nailed down starter in this team. That's why I think we should be sticking a price-tag north of £10m on him. Hopefully suiters see that and promptly "Foxtrot Oscar"!

Player Values
at 09:58 31 Jul 2023

Seen some interesting discussion on Twitter since the Walton to Luton link surfaced, with some wild variation quoted on Walton's value.

I've seen everything from Luton fans saying he's not worth even £3m, through to some slightly more optimistic Ipswich fans pricing him up at £20m! The reality is somewhere in between, obviously, but I can't help but think that if we were to sell any of our key assets, it certainly would be for a massively inflated fee.

The fact is, we don't need to sell. Our owners aren't looking to start seeing a return on their investment for at least a couple more years yet, and they know the serious money is in the Premier League. So, whilst an asset like Walton may very well have been let go for a quick buck under Marcus Evans - perhaps £4-5m - I honestly can't see us entertaining a penny less than £10m - maybe more.

Maybe Walton isn't quite that level, but his value to us right here, right now, is significant. He's a key component of this team, so why would we sell? Same rule will apply to the likes of Chaplin, Broadhead, Morsy, Woolfenden, etc... it would have to be silly money, surely, for us to even pick up the phone.

Banter or Hate?
at 09:58 12 Jul 2023

Thought provoking, Peter.

I've selected "banter" in both instances, and "mildly offensive, should be warned" to both chants.

I think we've gone soft as a society. Taking the P out of each other is rapidly dying a death, and clearly both instances we meant jokingly with no actual hate behind them. For me there's a big difference between hateful discrimination, and joking discrimination.

Personally I'd choose not to sing either of those chants, but at the same time, if someone next to me was singing them, I'd probably just turn a blind eye. Don't need the grief.

I think 2014-15 would win it, just about, but it wouldn't be pretty. It would be a display of complete and utter anti-football.

L1 interest in Greg Leigh
at 16:16 3 Jul 2023

I'd sell him at the right price. JD can cover both sides, Burgess can play left back, or we could even revert to a wing-back type shape if absolutely desperate and throw Edwards in there. Leigh's a quality player and needs to be playing.
