Forgot to add Knudsen - who possibly had his worst ever performance yesterday - only with many others he was truly anonymous.

So - despite being to a number of recent away games including Burton and Hull, I have not bothered to file a match report for a while. For the Villa game I feel I have to...to get it off my chest!

Had I known what I know now I should have stayed in the Wellington where I drank with a Villa fan I know, the conversation revealed Villa have been very poor this season against expectation, have a striker crisis with only the youngster fit and that the defence is limited as well.........so clearly generous Ipswich were going to do what they do so well!

The line up was interesting, without Didz we were always going to struggle to find much attacking guile, although Martyn Waghorn ended as the stand out man of the match and did look like he could cause issues.

I can not give the most objective view on the first half as the "seats" I was in with Mrs and son, were actually taken by other people and the standing reminded me of days gone by in the pre-all seater North stand, only with seats there!!!! Quite how that many people were in a row of seats is beyond me and the stewarding was poor at best!

I fail to see what Garners early goal was disallowed, we will never know how we would have gone on had it stood, but on the evidence of Hull, we would have sat back.

Player ratings perhaps illustrate my personal view of the performance:
Bart 5 - little to do in truth but not able to stop the two poor goals conceded, possibly fouled/impeded during the early phase.
Iorfa - 3 terrible. The mistake he made typified the performance and yet another defensive gift.
Chambers - 4. Not as reliable as he has been, some poor defending and constant long balls out of defence.
Webster - 5 Easily out best defender. I would love to see a Smith/Webster partnership
Skuse - 5. Struggled to get into the game
Connolly 3. After a great game midweek he seemed to be totally anonymous, apart from getting a yellow from another very poor referee.
Ward - 4 Did not warrant his place back in the starting XI on this performance.
Sears - 3 Was he actually on the pitch - offered nothing.
Waghorn 7 Head and shoulders our best player, tried to get things going, needed support from a non-existant midfield.
Garner - Tried as he always does, disallowed goal deflated him (and others).

Subs - Bishop - 4 ran around, made two very snappy challenges. Not on long enough to influence.
Huws - 5 needs games, still likely to be our best midfielder by a distance.
Celina - 3 As anonymous as Sears.

The detail has been posted elsewhere, and above. So a simple personal player ratings with a bit of explanation:

Bart - 8 Some splendid saves again, a couple of key ones, still not sure if he saved a shot destined for the net at 2-1, or if it was a deflection. Kicking much better, but a couple back passes made that tricky for him too.
Iorfa - 8 Absolutely storming first half, from the wing back perspective, just a shame we did not manage to capitalise on his marauding runs.
Chambers - 8 Pick of the defenders, quite simply tried to hold a makeshift defence together. A couple of fabulous blocks in the latter stages.
Spence - 6 better in the second half as part of a pair, but all too often in the first half seemed not to be in position.
Knudsen - 7 First half not so good, but after the move to LB he looked assured, linked well with Sears and others and set up Didz equaliser with a great cross.
Nydam - 5 Difficult day for him, quite anonymous except when taking corners.
Downes - 6 Got stuck in, did a few neat and tidy things but nowhere near as impactive as the Birmingham game.
Skuse - 7 Another 7/10 game, as the senior player in midfield it was incumbent on him to help the young lads and try and hold things together.
Sears - 5 Loads of running, better in second half when switched wide but does look bereft of goalscoring again -that said had precious little opportunity first half.
Garner - 6 A big battle with that horrible centre back, should have had a penalty when being sat upon and clearly had Barnsley concerned as they seemed to want to wind him up and get him to react.
McGoldrick - 8 Pure class - a great finish with the volley to equalise, some classic control and possession retention during the half, looks fit. The backheel to Garner to set up Waghorn was sublime.
Waghorn - 8 Came on and player wide, looked to get on the ball and not waste it, physically gave the Barnsley LB a real battle and showed skill and finishing to put away the winner - Great signing!
McDonnell - 6 Not on long enough to really make an impact, but I liked what I saw. Gets stuck in and I would think in line for a start on Tuesday.

Manager rating - 7 Picked a team with what he had, brave enough to change it at half time and not wait and clearly it worked.

Just on the train North from Kings Cross, what an odd day. The set up was the same as the Wigan game, it was clear early on that it was ineffective against how Fulham had set up. Defensively we remain a shambles and it looks like some of the players do not want to work with each other. There is frustration throughout the side and it's hard to see any single thing fixing the problems at the club.

A large and vociferous following was left non plussed by a not very good first half where lots of similar balls were aimed forward at our side with no target man. The goals we conceded were frustrating and preventable, Bart made a good stop but the only person to react was the Fulham striker, in the second half when we went for ut, our shots pushed out by the keeper were gobbled up by defenders.

The half time formation change was much needed, but did expose Kenlock as a better left wing back, than full back. Space for Fulham seemed to be common place. However it could all have been different had McGoldrick, our best player, been luckier with his great shot that struck the upright.

There was lots of good town chances in the second half but all went begging, a combination of poor finishing (Sears) and some near misses,. Lawrence added some verve and direct play after the break but his decision making when to make a pass, or in his case when niot to, meant we did not succeed.

There was some pushing and shoving at the front of the stand as frustration and anger with how the club is being run boiled over, I have to say it appears to be a situation that the current club management have caused.

Ratings

Bart. 6. Possibly slow to get down to the third and unlucky with the first,
Spence. 5. Neat but looked off the pace
Kenlock. 5. As a wing back ok, but as a left back caught out a few times, however gesture to the fans at the end shows why we must build for the future around players like him.
Berra. 5. Took his goal well, but still looks terrible against any pace
Smirh. 4. Disappointed, not one of his better games.
Chambers 3. Anonymous, spends most of his time digging out teammates. Would not be my choice for captain in a new world.
Ward. 6. Tried to get things going, no real end product but in a good side will be excellent
Dave. 5. Neat and tidy, did look forward but often found no movement.
Hows. 4. A disappointment, but did put in a couple of surging runs in the second half
Sears 4. Ran well, got in positions but squandered a gilt edged chance and probably should have been replaced at half time.
Didz. 8. Head and shoulders our best player, at times trying to carry the team on his own, creator and unlucky to get a goal. His end of match move to stand in the goalmouth applauding the fans perhaps speaks volumes about what is going. On at the club

Subs

Lawrence 6. Exciting, direct, but FFS pass to people better placed sometimes.
Pitmsn. What is the point of giving our only natural finisher 5 minutes?
Samuel. 3. Anonymous.

Manager. Zero. So,etching has to give!
Referee. Terrible, did not appear to see anything.

For once stopping in Ipswich after a game....so not having to write this from a train! Hard to describe the game, a bright start which faded, a second half which started badly and then moved to frustration and when Andre came on an excellent attacking 20 minutes.

Its it a co incidence we win with only half of Sluglass playing?

Bart. Was clattered by Berra in a mix up for their goal but not a lot to do.
chambers. As ever not looking like a secure right back but not terrible.
Kenlock. Refreshingly good at LB. composed on the ball but needs a run in the side because he is better than Knhdsen.
Berra. Had a real battle with Wilbraham and won it.
Webster, a couple of shaky moments but on the whole a good performance with one terrific Crossfield ball in the first half standing out.
Bru. Neat and tidy and toom his goal very well, but faded away and Andre shone as his replacement,
Skuse. Anonymous
Ward, our best player in the first balf, some good dribbles even if the final cross needed to be better
Lawrence. A great second half. But he really does need to pass to others at times!
Pitman. Save for his excellently taken goal did very little, I cannot recall him winning a single header out in the Steve Whitton role.
Didz. Still our most talented player, always looking to go forward and make things happen

Dozzell. For the 20 plus minutes he was on, man of the match! Forward passing with both accuracy and incisiveness, one wonderful run and through ball, composure on the ball and vision, he is going to be a star.

Papering over the cracks. The team selection smacked of last chance saloon with the unbelievable recall of Knudsen over the very unlucky Kenlock. So some optimism pre match which continued with an early penalty to Town, not that it was obvious from the far end of the DW where we were congregated. That was where the positivity stopped, despite the late winner, with another woeful performance against an even more goal shy and dismal side in Wigan. The first half saw some nice flashes from Dozzell and Williams but the former was clearly affected by an early, and unjustified, yellow from Mr Fussy aka Keith Stroud.

The game was played mostly in thickening fog which does not help an objective match report, however even with the fog it was obvious that defensively we are a disaster, Berra appears to be thinking of heading back to Scotland and Chambers was again woeful, being absolutely skinned at will by anyone with a bit of pace.

The withdrawal of Dozzell was predictable and correct whilst Zi hope Williams was off for a knock..... Having said that Didz made a difference and placed the winning header perfectly to endure three valuable if not deserved points headed to East Anglis.

Pitman is not, and never will be a target man but took his penalty well, the second being yet another deflection wrong footing the keeper. The fact that Bart was our saviour more than once is becoming common and I suggest without him we could be bottom 3

The highlight was the girl at half time blasting in penalties and the knee slide! More passion form her than the team today. As soon as I saw the team, irrespective of winninG Tuesday, it was clearly going to be a day we set up for nil nil and hope to not concede. A midfield so slow and ponderous it made it easy for the Rotherham counterparts, a defence who wanted to get rid of the ball as soon as they touched it and seemingly disinterested forward line. The goal was always likely to be from a mistake and Douglas made two, an awful pass intercepted, a tackle missed and our defence outpaced by Best who seemed to mush it his shot past a possibly wrong footed Bart.

The second half started better with the introduction of Feeney who does look a player, creating havoc down the right and forcing a succession of corners. However such was Rotherhams aerial dominance that not one came to anything. The second half then petered out with constant heading of the ball and long hoofs as has become the MM trademark, we lost nearly every header all game and still persisted with Plan B. When Pringle came on it meant Feeney had to be switched and we saw less of him.

MM was out tacticed by Warnock and it is hard not to justify the boos from a disgruntled fan base, paying dome of the highest prices in this league and seeing little reward. The fact we are hoping for Didz to be back says it all. But the McCarthy way is just that and The only way the style of football will change us when he calls it a day.

North not South, What an away day, the loss of AMN gave some cause for concern before the game. But as it turned out Douglass had one of his best games in a town shirt. It was always going to be the case that when Murphy broke his duck more would follow but never did we dare dream of a hat Rick, Granted Rotherham were poor but today saw more passing football on the ground, it saw Town controlling the game and the large away following lapping it up. Today I thought the stand out players were PitmAn, Muprphy obviously and Tommy Smith. The use of Sears wide clearly has a future And he worried the defence a,, afternoon. After going. Four up a comeback was threatened as town stood off Rotherham and allowed two spectacular goals hath threatened.a come back.

Ratings.
Gergen. 6. Not a lot to do but still not the most decisive off his line. Having said that we could have Lee Camp!
Chambers 6. A better performance but seldom tested, one shot resulted in a chorus of swing lo by the blues faithful.
Knudsen. 7. Rarely troubled and decent going forward
Berra. 7. Commanding in he main but still, not quite back to his best
Smith. 8. Pick of the defence, won everything, calm and assured,
Douglass. 7. Great finish for the goals industrious and his best Town display I have see
Skuse. 7. Workman,I've, reliable and able to get the ball on the floor and control things.
Bru. 7. This would have been higher had he replicated his first half performance in the second.
Murphy. 8. Three very very clinically taken goals, a constant threat and could well kick on now
Sears. 8. A thorn in the side of Ritherham. Chased and ran at people, the defence was petrified of him.
Pitman 9. Great early goal, a real strikers finish. Clever and intelligence link up and hold up play, and his commitment typified by chasing down the keeper in the 93rd minute.

Well that was dire! The second half was exceptional when compared to the first and that is where the positives stop, a subdued crowd did get behind the Town in the second half, but that was mainly in disgust at some of the worst bits of officiating I have seen in years, and the questionable tactics of some Huddersfield players, notably Lynch.

Another positive perhaps was that we kept a clean sheet, no doubt MM will sing the defences praises post match but we were poor and better finishing could have seen us off, in fact the goal line clearance from Berra after the ball was flicked past Gerken was the most telling moment of the match,

Gerken. Not a lot to do, one poor kick which could have spelt trouble, and requiring the back up of Berra to prevent a goal,
Chambers. IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE A RIGHT BACK, that aside was on a tightrope after a yellow card and did have some choice opinions of the the linesman and some Huddersfield play acting.
Knudsen. In the first half looked out of his depth, improved vastly in the second and has clear potential. Long throws now too predictable but perhaps wise as he seems to be unable to take normal ones.
Smith. Looked decent against a very physical attack,
Berra. Getting back to the standard we expect, his goal line clearance was the highlight of the match.
Skuse. Anonymous in the first half but did have our one shot of the 45. More involved in the second half and actually was in attacking positions,
Douglass. What does he do to justify his starting position, really was same old, same old.
Mainland Niles. Looked good in flashes, despite attempts to kick him off the pitch, clearly talented but needs to be in a firing side.
Oar. I liked his first 20 mins, running at people and crossing, but then faded badly and no surprise when he went off at half time.
Pitman. Very poor. Lazy getting back on side so when we break he cannot take part.
Sears. Ran his socks off for no reward, switched position second half and was still a dangerous raider. Needs some support.

Didz. We looked a better side when he came on, dropped deep to get the ball, linked play. Could have got the winner but their keeper Steer made a good save, making himself big and stopping it with his foot.
Murphy. Looked hungry when introduced, won more headers than recent games and certainly looked sharp.
Toure. Oh dear the worst corner ever seen at PR!

So to sum it up, we looked like a mid table, out of confidence side, not sure where the next win is coming from without a creative spark and a regimented set of tactics all too predictable for the opposition.

Anyway onto a pretty forgettable match report.
Gerken - 6, one good save although had it been hit either side of him it would have gone in. Not at fault this time for the goals but seems to not breed confidence with his defence still.
Chambers - 5. Caught out a bit too often in the first half, scored a good far post header and relativelyneffectivengoing forward.
Knudsen - 6. Workmanlike, great cross for our opener but his long throws are getting rather predictable.
Smith - 6. Possibly the pick of our defenders.
Berra - 4. Worst I have seen him play in a town shirt
Douglas - 4 what does he give us? Pedestrian at best. Low score despite the one surge he finally made and led to our equaliser, stubborn Mick has to change the CM pairing
Skuse - 4. Normally Mr Reliable but today Mr Invisible,
AMN - 6. Was targeted by a physical Bristol side but still showed flashes of creativity
Fraser - 7. He won more headers than Murphy, always trying to get the ball down on the ground and make something happen,
Murphy - 3. Lost nearly every header, does not look the player of last season, or unfit, one good shot in the second half and should probably have been subbed earlier
Sears 5 - not one of Freddie's best but as ever he chased and tried

Didz 6. our one class player, surely he has to start when fit, even in an attacking midfield role
Pitman 5. Adds a new dimension and is always trying to control the ball, we ahould make more of his partnership with Fraser

MM. Tactically wrong again? Bristol City had a very tall back line, so we kept banging long high balls when Murphy was winning nothing. Midfield is the major issue with no creativity, yes we have injuries but Skuse and Douglas have no forward thought between the

Well after a fair hike from the station to Deepdale, we settled in on the steeply banked stand with around 1000 other blues. The loss of Bart was a blow, and with Maitland Niles on the bench it felt like it would be a bit of a challenging afternoon.

Its best to sum it up as a whole with some observations, we struggled to play the ball on the ground and create throughout the game, Gerken made some good saves, but still looked ill at ease, as did the defence with him too. Chambers led from the front again, and seemed to be much further forward, again his defending and his leadership shone through. Berra looked out of sorts and was beaten to headers countless times by the much shorter Joe Garner (except when he was on the floor, which he was for a large percentage of the match). Smith had one of his better games, but his distribution is still quite predictable. Knudsen continues to impress, and made one phenomenal second half block after Gerken had made a spectacular looking save. Skuse was once again excellent, some vital interceptions and in the second half he was the man with time to get the ball down and pick a pass. Douglas is industrious, but I think the future will see him a key squad player rather than a first choice. Fraser impresses, he has moments of brilliance but could do with improving his corner delivery, his goal was sheer class and worth the admission money on its own. Sears is our golden boy, no goals today but he has a footballing brain and it was his ball in that saw Pitman header us into the lead. Pitman looks and out and out goalscorer, quite why he was the midfield man and not Didz. McGoidrick made very little impact today, but we did persist in pumping long balls up ton him - which with the best will in the world he is unlikely to win many of. Maitland Niles came on for Didz and really is a player, more chasing, a superb run halted by a trip and actually looking a class above the average champtionship player. All in all a hard fought victory and one where we did not play as we can but got three wonderful points.

Finally with wifi after stopping down for the game, now headed North to home... A game of two halves would be a good way to sum it up, with the injuries to Murphy and Fraser possibly unwittingly improving our line up in the 2nd 45. The pitch seemed very good, but perhaps after the rain overwatered and hard to turn quickly on without slipping.

The first half we looked a bit ragged with not much passing, plenty of hoofball which was gobbled up by a large Burnley defence. We were lucky to go in at 0-0 at half time, but the team talk and/or arrival of Pitman seemed to spur a new found belief and passages of passing football.

The goals were both at the other end from the SBR so a tad hard to give much detail other than the balls hitting the net. Didz looked back towards his best, hold up play superb, the ability to shield the ball and always have that extra yard to keep the ball in his possession. In Knudsen we have unearthed another LB success, although his attempts at normal throw ins perhaps need some tweaking. The midfield, so bypassed in the first half, seemed a little one dimensional with Douglas seemingly a similar player to Scuse but perhaps less mobile. Ainsley Maitland Niles really impressed, and although clearly not his natural game, was getting stuck in and some chasing back earning him a standing ovation, he also seems to be able to deliver some splendidly dangerous corners.

At the back, generally solid and although it was one of Tommy Smiths better games, there was a lot of covering done by Chambers, maybe not always needing to actually get the ball, but often in the centre back positions. A leader on the pitch, I noted his encouragement for all but particularly the younger lads - very few can have done more to bring the players closer to the fans that our skipper.

A cracking second half atmosphere too, which perhaps spurred the players on, not the other way around as Stuart Watson claims! Bart did not have a brilliant game, but kept a clean sheet and at the end pulled off one marvellous point blank save which showed he is, and should be our number 1 this season.

The only positive is that being a Yorkshire based blue, its only an hour home! A first half so dire I cannot recall anything as bad, even in the Duncan days. Defensively naïve, tactically inept, impotent up front and non-existant in midfield. I felt at half time that we needed to work out were actually playing in Orange. The Huddersfield team was efficient, pacy and more importantly up for it, Before the game the side picked seemed to be a typical "away point" line up, and it proved even worse.

I don't want to castigate any individuals but Fryers looked out of his depth, Wood like a carthorse. Chaplow was neat and tidy but ineffectual.

After the break we perked up, initially looking good with Varney scoring an excellent far post header from a Tabb cross (the only one I can recall us putting in). I also am amazed just how difficult it is for Town to take a throw in, so many times there was no movement.

Man of the Match for us, Freddie Sears - oh why oh why did he not start????

A hard game to actually make head or tail of, some great chances in the second half and we should have won. Before the match the team selection hardly inspiring and from a personal point of view the persistence with Smith at CB whilst Chambers is stuck at RB continues to baffle. frustration again with endless high and long balls, aided by an inept refereeing performance and some questionable offside decisions

In terms of players
Gerken. Had a nervouse first half but looked better in the second half, still not my choice between the sticks. Overall 6/10
Chambers. Hardly inspirational today and again out of place at RB. 5/10
Mings. A better performance. 6/10
Smith. Got away with a handball which was obvious from the North stand, lots of aimless hoofbball and still not looking comfortable 4/10
Berra. Again not excellent but won his fair share of headers. 6/10
Parr. Not convinced he is a left sided midfielder but tried his hardest. 7/10
Scuse. My man of the match, assured and tried to get it on the bloody ground. 8/10
Tabb. Good today, guaranteed 100% effort. 7/10
Chaplow. Not over impressive it did look like he could play on the ground. 6/10
Murphy. Led the line and despite the miss in the second half, where would be we without him. 7/10
Sears. I like him a lot, unlucky to be substituted when he did seem effective. 7/0

Subs. Bishop. Needs to play centrally, is our future. 6/10
Wood. On that performance he can go back to Leicester 4/10

Winning the toss was the last thing to go right, we were a very average championship side today without the desire which has seen us over achieve. It was clear that with Eddie (I don,t like booking players who injure Johnny Wiliams) Ilderton as referee it was clear physical challenges would be allowed, we needed to meet fire with fire. Murphy wore a mask but clearly did not realish going for headers - so we kept pumping the ball up to him to head. Mings did not look at it today, no desire, poor passing etc. Smith needs dropping, his first thought is to go back, decision making poor, hesitant too. It is time for Chambers to go to CB to allow our best full back, Parr to take his place.

I felt taking off Bishop was not the right thing to do, Tabb had been more effective than some but was taken off with a bizarre move of Parr to midfield. Frustrating is the way to describe today, we had Stewart on the bench so why not take the gamble? And as for time wasting I think Reading and Frederici in particular have taken it to a new level.
