[Blog] Not So Keane Tue 24th Nov 2009 11:17
Six years ago a football club sold its soul and it is an issue that still burns on today leaving a very nasty taste in mouths of many. This blog has been submitted by Bluefish09. Wimbledon FC, the club that so many had a soft spot for due to their FA Cup heroics with the small poor side toppling the mighty machine that was Liverpool. The Crazy Gang unity that knew they would be up against it with their lack of finances but always punched above their weight and had to be respected despite their style. Almost overnight everything was erased they were a new club, a new identity everything about them no longer counted and many refuse to accept that still today. My club Ipswich is one that has always been held in even higher regard than Wimbledon by the neutrals, not only have we mixed it with the big boys in our fascinating history but we have done every part of it in the right way. The football was played the right way, the club was run the right way with dignity epitomised by Sir Bobby Robson. Everywhere I have ever been I have been so proud to have been born in Suffolk and be a lifelong ITFC supporter, people home and abroad bring a smile to their face when the club is mentioned. Until now. My Ipswich has become ‘Roy Keane’s Ipswich’ in the way Wimbledon became MK Dons, our local eccentric owners have become a mystery man that we cannot relate to because we do not know who he is. Are these events comparable? It is clear why they have happened and the alternative would probably have been worse for both sides, both victims of trying to compete that were saved from potential collapse. I read in disbelief the day Marcus Evans swept into the club the fact that some supporters were disappointed. How could you be disappointed? We were rich enough to compete and get back to the Promised Land. They spoke about the club selling its soul but I just couldn’t understand it. I now look back at those few now and realise what they had seen. The money and takeover hasn’t destroyed us, it has saved us but it is a major part in this club’s evolution into a completely different football club. Could the old family Ipswich have competed today? Could they survive? I don’t know but now I wish we had waited to find out. We are in the worst position football-wise that I can remember in my 29 years of supporting and we are no longer smiled at when you tell people who you support. It is now ‘Roy Keane’s Ipswich’ and people laugh at us and enjoy the demise. Why is this? Because our club no longer has those traditions for neutrals to relate to. We sold up in the same way that Wimbledon and we are victims of greed.

*shrugs* I'm sick of the 'Ohh we're a little arse-end-of-nowhere club who used to be good' image. I want winners, not country bumpkin's. I hope the fans don't force Marcus Evans' hand and get Keane sacked, cos it will come good. | 316 forum posts 35 news comments 1 match reports 0 blogs 0 polls | | Please log in to report abuse |

I would suggest Mr Fowler that you are the epitome of the modern supporter in that view. And the epitome of all that has gone wrong in the game. The value of a club isnt just in its trophies or premiership status | 378 forum posts 5 news comments 0 match reports 0 blogs 0 polls | | Please log in to report abuse |

Interestingly, I was reading the Mr John book about the Cobbold's last night. Back in 1983, Bobby Robson left for the England job, chairman John Cobbold passed away and Mel Henderson (Town's established public relations guru) was kicked out by John's brother Patrick - clearly there was no love lost between Patrick and Mel. It was portrayed as very much the end of an era, with Patrick's approach very different to that of his brother. THAT was when our club changed. Not when Marcus Evans took over. | 1639 forum posts 49 news comments 0 match reports 2 blogs 0 polls | | Please log in to report abuse |

'Are these events comparable?' No of course not. We are still Ipswich Town FC and we still play at Portman Road. | 1906 forum posts 4 news comments 2 match reports 0 blogs 0 polls | | Please log in to report abuse |

we the fans are the club, always have been and always will. Whether we stay a family club or not is down to us and how we behave, it has nothing to do with the owners etc, they have come and gone, just as managers and players do | 0 forum posts 170 news comments 0 match reports 0 blogs 0 polls | | Please log in to report abuse |

What a load of old tosh ! Totally pointless ! What makes Marcus Evans "a mystery man" ?? Is it just because you don't know what he looks like ??? We know everything else about him. Stop blubbing and just accept the fact you've been banned from the forum. | 6051 forum posts 2 news comments 0 match reports 0 blogs 0 polls | | Please log in to report abuse |

Well written Fishy and I can see your points. But what's the point in moaning about it. The club has moved forward and that will ultimately be seen on the pitch. | 1910 forum posts 1 news comments 0 match reports 0 blogs 0 polls | | Please log in to report abuse |
