Keane: Unbelievably Bad Defending
Keane: Unbelievably Bad Defending
Saturday, 30th Jan 2010 18:55

Boss Roy Keane slammed the defending which led to Preston’s first goal during the Blues’ 2-0 defeat at Deepdale and continues to be frustrated by his side’s own lack of goals.

Keane said: "From our point of view the first goal came from unbelievably bad defending. We don't score enough goals so we are putting ourselves under pressure all the time.

"We had our chances again and didn't take them and that's very disappointing.

"We looked fairly comfortable but we lacked a cutting edge and it looks as though we have to play unbelievably well to score one or two goals.

"When you are only scoring the odd goal, you are always going to be under pressure because at some stage, the opposition are going to create their own chances.

"We're looking over our shoulder now and we've got to fight our way up the table.

"The players have got to roll their sleeves up and scrap for the points. Our first priority is to get away from the bottom of the table and then we'll see where it takes us."

Asked whether he might look at signing Michael Chopra - who played for him at Sunderland - from cash-strapped Cardiff, the Blues boss didn’t entirely rule it out: "Chops is a very, very good striker. Whether our club can afford him on his wages remains to be seen."

Preston boss Darren Ferguson was delighted with loanee Danny Welbeck’s first Lilywhites goal: "You may call it cheeky but it was one hell of a finish. He showed great composure but we've got to be careful we don't place too much responsibility on him.

"He's only 19 and has come into a really hard league that he has never played in before.

"But as soon as he scored you could see the shackles come off and he grew in confidence. You would pay to see that sort of goal alone. What a magnificent finish."

Ferguson was quick to play down any rivalry with his former Manchester United team-mate Roy Keane: "This wasn't about me or Roy. Roy is a good lad and the fact he was involved today had nothing to do with it.

"Ipswich had only lost one of their last 15 so this was a good result for us."

If we can get Chops then brilliant. But why would he ever come to us??

RobbieScarlatti - as you say why would he come to us and moreover why would he want to be managed by Keane. I am a season ticket holder in the North Stand and will always support my team but now I just long for the day when Keane goes. He has done nothing for our club except take us dangerously close to the trap door. He cannot attract quality players and certainly not that much needed striker. They simply do not want to be managed by him and quality managers appear reluctant to let us have their rising youngsters on loan seemingly reluctant to trust their youngsters development and future to Keane.

I thought David Wright was playing well over recent weeks and the defence was looking solid, so can anyone tell me why Peters played ahead of him at Southampton and Balkestein was played at left-back (out-of-position!) today? No wonder we can't defend with the changes being made. I thought we had got over this chopping and changing that marred our performance and results earlier in the season!

The lack of a quality striker is such a problem and it looks unlikely we will sign anyone tomorrow or Monday. As others have said, why would someone come here now? It is so worrying to see us in 21st position in the table with tough matches to come. Everyone has been talking about the improvement in our team but we now haven't won in three! :-o

Firmfoundation - this talk of people not wanting to play foe keane is unfounded, we have had numerous players who played under keane return. Also when keane was sland manager he literally took chopra in when he was having problems and have him live under his roof so if he'll move for anyone it'll be keane

Firm Foundation, I couldn't disagree more. Four points:

> Keane is rebuilding our squad from the ramshackle side we had under Magilton. Yes Magilton bought well at the start but then lost the plot.
> 90% of Keane's siginngs are greater in quality than we've had for a long time at this club. Some are taking far too long to settle though or find any form which i have to query, but your point about quality i couldn't disagree more with.
> As for younger players not being allowed to come to our club because of his management style, that is also litter. Any manager would let them go if they felt it was right, as they'll get games, play under a disciplinarian which youngsters need and play for a 'man' manager with vast playing experience.
> As for the striker....! I'd rather wait and get the right one than donk money on rubbish.

As for Priskin, as he'll undoubtedly get a mention after my some of my comments, i think we can all see from glimpses at the West Brom there is quality there although he needs to start doing it more frequently and quick!

firmfoundations - you are right in your comments - I feel that at best Keane has created total disarray at a once great club - we are currently floundering and heading totally in the wrong direction.

firmfoundations - So no manager wants to let Keane have emerging young talent but Steve Bruce extended Colback's loan to the end of the season?

h32 - You make it sound like we were playing Premier League and Champions League football last season! I fail to understand why people have so many rose tinted views of the Magilton. The last time we really looked good since relegation from the Prem was 2004-05 when we just missed out on automatic promotion (and then were dumped out of the play-offs by a team we finished 12 points above in the league). Under Jim we had two mediocre seasons and one season where we ALMOST made the play-offs. I'm not saying everything Keane has done is perfect - but he's not the primary cause of us floundering, we've been doing that for a while.

i agree with firm foundations town are hopeless under keane he has been the main problem.the worry is if we get a run of defeats like early in the season we could go downmaybe that would wake some people up to the reality but it is easier to look at the season so far. wins, losses, draws table position.... and realize we need a new manager and quick

So Roy, you slam our defending and say we don't score enough goals. Mmmmm, so why the hell aren't you doing something about it? I really want you to succeed here but you're making it very difficult for yourself - start with Pim and (I'm sorry to say) Pablo out.

Those who disagree with my assessment put these words into a well known sentence "glasses, tinted, rose". Cant understand why you back Keane let me just remind you - three points of relegation. Been decades since we were this low in the Championship/First Division at this stage in the season. Chopra? yes I would be happy to see him he is beter than John but remember he cant get regular starts in Cardiff's side. My what a star!!!!!!!!!!

For all flouncers on here...time to get real...all you want is instant success and expect it...what you don't understand is we are in the middle of building a team and it is far from the finished article. RK was signed for two years and if you can't see the quality RK has already bought to the team, if you can't see how he is getting some of the best performances from average players then I would suggest you somehow learn something about the game. The hardest thing for RK is the gulf in money between Premiership players and CCC. We can not pay Premiership prices and players today are not willing to take a pay cut to play regular football in a lower league. RK will not birng in players that aren't any better than the ones we have which is a sign of a good manager, he won't let the fans unease force his hand he knows what he is looking for.
As for todays match it was a set back but then again it is a jinx ground for us not having won there for 30 years. The important thing is how well we bounce back against Middlesborough and we must get a win. Would be great if we could get Chopra and yes I do think he would come here but can we afford him is the question.

Chopra would be great but despite Cardiff's money problems he would still cost us serious money in ITFC terms so I won't get my hopes too high. I like Keane, his honesty is refreshing and I think long-term he will prove his doubters wrong. Unfortunately, he got it wrong today. If you are going to play 4-5-1 you must have midfield players linking with and getting beyond the lone striker and as much as I like Leadbitter, Norris, Peters and Colback, that did not happen today. Felt sorry for Priskin, the system left him badly isolated and I am sure some will make him the scapegoat due to his miss just after half time (they would be wrong imo). Tense times at PR and earlier posts are spot-on, Chopra would give the place a lift - fingers crossed!

I don't really understand this whole excuse for our league position being about 're-building'. If Magic had such a damaging effect on the team, how come he still managed to take them to the top half of the table? Keane isn't doing that. No other manager takes over a play off challenging team, takes them to the brink of relegation, but gets excused as its rebuilding. Its f**king retarded what some fans have let Keane get away with.

Spot on RobbieScarlatti..I've taken a back seat on here over the last couple of months simply because I was getting sick of the monotonous arguments pro/anti Keane...We have picked up defensively (most notably when David wright was brought back in) but now Keane is chopping and changing needlessly yet again..I thought he'd learnt his lessons but still keeps on making these stupid decisions which are putting our championship status in real danger.

I've given up on him deciding on a front 2 - it seems to be whichever 2 he fancies on the day - which is why our top scorer still only has 6 goals on the eve of february for god's sake.

I hope he does bring in a Chopra or a Kevin Phillips before monday because as it stands we need to double our points tally in the next 14 weeks otherwise we're gonna be up sh1t creek without a goalscorer or a paddle.

Keane's comments suggest that we are in discussions with Chopra and his club. Sounds promising...

Priskin is too lazy to play on his own up front, Stead is not a right-sided midfielder, and Balkestein is a centre-half, not a left back. I think we would have got something out of this game had we been more positive and played a more attacking formation with players in their correct positions. In my opinion, Keane got it badly wrong today.
