Stead Linked With Huddersfield Return
Stead Linked With Huddersfield Return
Sunday, 6th Jun 2010 12:01

Striker Jon Stead is reported to be in line for a possible return to his hometown club Huddersfield Town. Stead, who has another year on his contract at Portman Road, is one of the players likely to be considered surplus to requirements this summer.

The 27-year-old spent the second half of the season on loan at Coventry City and looked set to sign a permanent deal with the Sky Blues. A £400,000 fee was understood to have been agreed between the clubs, but manager Chris Coleman’s replacement with Aidy Boothroyd may have scuppered that move.

Other Championship clubs are also likely to be interested, so a switch to a League One side would perhaps be a surprise move, although the former England U21 international started his career at Huddersfield and was born in the Yorkshire town.

Stead is said to be holding talks with the Terriers regarding his potential return later in the week.

Huddersfield’s squad already features two ex-Blues, striker Jordan Rhodes and midfielder Gary Roberts.

Meanwhile, Carlisle boss Greg Abbott has says he has received no approaches for veteran defender Ian Harte, despite the Blues, Norwich, Watford, QPR and former club Leeds having been linked in recent weeks: “We are looking to construct a team and Ian will be part of that. Nobody has come in for him and I want him here and in my starting 11."

Speculation regarding current Town interest in Harte stems from the Blues' attempt to sign the former Ireland international on loan in November.

Shame for him if he has to drop down a level, although i cant ever see him scoring 20+ goals a season in the championship.

Would be a fantastic signing for them, Stead still has plenty to offer at this level and imvho has been our best striker over the last two seasons.

How can you think Stead has been our best striker when our top goalscorer last season was Walters! If we have serious intentions of promotion then we clearly need a better calibre of striker than Stead, we are fortunate to have Wickham come through & signing someone of Chopra's quality would give us a a lovely blend up front. I have never been a huge fan of Priskin, but am prepared to give him another chance I believe he would be a good back up.

Wish Stead well, but think this is the right decision.

suffolkngood - i would imagine that Souperjim is basing his opinion on goals to games ratio, where stead would be comfortably higher than jon walters over the last couple of seasons. but keane has his favourites and those that he just doesnt seem to get on with (and i really dont think its all down to their footballing abilities).

Division 1 is Stead's level. He will score goals there. Sadly he didn't get anywhere near 20 goals a season for us - and after a decent start failed to score for several games at Coventry before injury.

If you are happy with a couple of goals - followed by 7 or 8 games without a goal then Stead is your man. Personally I would cash in, save on the huge wages and sign Chopra.

Stead has been in and out of the side and generally has been messed around with by Keane. Walters on the other hand has been a regular, so it's hardly a fair comparison. When Stead was actually given a run of games he performed well for me. He also chipped in with some important goals which he created himself out of next to nothing, something that nobody else in the entire squad managed all season.

Keane clearly has relationship problems with Stead and seems to set the bar very high where Stead is concerned, much higher than he has for players in his favour. For example, D Healy did sod all for us, but he got just as many opportunities as Stead, if not more. Ok so we signed him on loan and have to do the right thing by him and his parent club, but I'd rather see such loyalty shown to our own players first.

I don't expect to see Stead here next season and given Roy's attitude towards him I don't want to see him here either, so my comments are only for discussion's sake. However, Keane factor aside, can you honestly hand of heart say he is a significantly worse player than D Murphy? I can't. Yet it would appear we are prepared to pay at least 500k for Murphy while letting Stead go for a song. I'm fully behind Keane, but I don't care what anyone says, thats poor man management.

Of course it's all academic if we can bring in Chopra. If we sign just one player this summer, for the love of Sir Bobby I hope it's Chopra.

Just imagine if this move happens and Stead teams up with Rhodes and they score a hatful of goals - oh how the moaners and groaners will just love that! Stead will be one of our higher wage earners and if we can get £400,000 + for him then this will be OK for a player who will leave for nothing in 12 months time and is likely not to figure that often in the starting eleven. Wholehearted 100% effort but flatters to deceive in my opinion. We get lulled into thinking we have some kind of aerial presence and ability to hold the ball up with Stead in the team and this just isn't true. His control is too often lacking and he cannot head the ball at all. You have to ask yourself why a player who has been touted as top quality and has gone for biggish money on a number of ocassions hasn't stayed with any one club more than a couple of seasons - answer - inconsistency and not quite good enough. If he goes, then good luck to him but he is not the answer and not the man to help us challenge at the top of the Championship.

Another year as a bit part player will do JS no good, so from a footballing perspective it may be best for him to move on to further his career. That said, I understand JS has a young family, and moving may not be best for them. A move back to Yorkshire may appeal if there is family there, however his wages may prove to be a stumbling block.

Can I just say chaps, what a delight it is to come on here & read a good number of constructive & thoughtful posts, without some of the rubbish that gets spouted!!.... We will all have differing thoughts, but at the end of the day we ALL only want one thing.... the best for our beloved Town!!

Agreed, it would seem that perhaps most of the morons and poorly disguised budgies disappear between seasons, long may it continue.

goals to games ratio is an absolutely ridiculously poor, laughable, inaccurate, joke of a way to judge a player...

If Billy Clarke had stopped playing after his first 3 or 4 games what ever it was when he was scoring off the bench every game a couple of seasons ago he would have been our best striker that year by these workings lol but he wasn't and he never would be because he was awfull.

implying that someone was/is our best striker because of his goals:game ratio is implying that he would keep that up all season and when your only using a small amount of games to get his ratio you are clearly clutching at straws he has only ever had one half decent season scoring and that was only 17 and his general play is awful.

What does Chopra's goal ratio of 9 goals in his last 40 games make him?

Mr Blueknight clearly no-one is naive enough to judge a player on the ridiculous terms you describe, so whats your point? In my opinion goals to games ratio does give you some kind of yardstick, if you take into consideration number of appearances and how many of those are back to back, but it would be ludicrous to suggest that this information should be used in isolation to give a comprehensive judgement.

Regardless, I didn't imply that his goals to games ratio makes Stead our best striker, in fact I didn't even mention statistics, stinki did. My main judgement of a player comes via my eyes. If you don't agree with me then why don't you engage in the debate and state your case for who you think has been our best striker of the Keane era to date, rather than simply trying to ridicule me.

Stead is a good work horse player! Will chase anything down. But unfortuanlly isnt a 20+ goalscorer. Clearly Keane doesnt like him, or doesnt feel he will do the job next year, and i agree.

We desperatly need a 20+ goalscorer, and if we dont get one we wont have a chance next year. I like Chopra and feel he will do the job, thats if we get him. But im trying to be more realistic hear, and think 'why would he actually come'.
1.Hes enjoying his life/ football over there.
2. Scoring pleny of goals for Cardiff, for the board not to lose him.
3.Wages are properly better over there.
4. And 4- seems like cardiff are okay finacally.

The only reason he would want to come hear will be because of Keane, but yet i still am not sure if we will be able to get him.

Hopefully i am wrong!

I agree that goal ratio is a poor judge of a player - which is why I stick by my earlier post. Stead is one of those players who goes through a stage of scoring several goals, but after a spurt, he will then go 7 or 8 games without a goal. He's very frustrating and for me too inconsistent.

we have been after a good striker since b f joe was here a fox in the box as he used to say if we want to challenge for promotion then we need more than 1 £4m player none off our first team would get into newcastle starting 11 chopra is a start but we have a few more average players to get rid off aswellto up the standard of the team
