German Keeper Set for Trial
German Keeper Set for Trial
Monday, 25th Jun 2012 08:47

Bayern Munich’s third-choice keeper Maximilian Riedmüller is set to join the Blues on trial during pre-season. The 24-year-old has been a regular for Bayern’s second string for the last two years but is yet to make an appearance for the first team, although he has been on their bench.

Riedmüller was with youth sides FV Hansa Neuhausen and TSV Forstenried before playing his first senior football with SV Heimstetten in the 2007/08 season in the Bayernliga (regionalised fifth tier).

The 6ft 2in tall keeper joined Bayern in 2008 and was in and out of their second team - which plays in the German lower leagues - during his first two seasons.

Munich-born Riedmüller established himself with the reserves side in 2010/11 in 3 Liga (third tier) and as a result was handed a professional contract and a place in the senior squad.

He continued as a regular with the second team last season, captaining the side led by former German international Mehmet Scholl as they finished 14th in the Regionalliga Süd (fourth tier). Riedmüller is contracted to Bayern until June 2013 but seems likely to move on this summer.

I like the sound of this, as theblueninger says it shows we have a thorough scouting system.

Should be good in a penalty shoot out!

We need a keeper that's for sure. Good to hear we are looking far and wide.

Can we sign Mehmet Scholl as well? May be 45 but a real class act.

Well done Phil. The only person to pick up that snippet! Would be good if he proves good as well as interesting, would be another big worry out of the way. COYB

Well as my name suggests I actually live and work in Munich and have for the last 6 years!
Now before you ask I dont know him my self however a number of my work colleagues are HUGE FCB fans so I asked about and they all say the same thing!

He is not good enough for Bayern 1st team especially with Neuer there, but they also say he is a good player and would do well at one of the lower placed teams ie Hoffenheim, Mainz or Frieburg (all top level teams, but middle of the pack think Fullham!).

SO me personally am happy with this bit of news and would like to see him at PR. I will now have to see if I can get any more news out of people here!!!

Also good to see us looking abroad more and widening our net, I personally miss our Dutch contingent seems odd not having a Dutchie in the blue and white of Ipswich!

I'm not entirely convinced that this chap is going to be any good. Finished 14th in the fourth tier?? However, Bayern Munich were impressed enough to sign him, so that's good enough for me.

German football is a goldmine of talent at the moment, and I am glad to see we are looking over there for players. Hopefully we are linked with some more gems.

I could not agree more MunichBlue. Living here in the Netherlands for twenty years I have seen many Dutch players represent the blues and I am hopeful another pre-season over here might just encourage the staff to bring one back with them!

When Fabian Wilnes hung up his boots, it marked the end of a long Dutch legacy which was unbroken since the days of Murhen and Thijssen until that is, Fab called it a day.

Looking at this utube collection, could be a great player for the town, Need some good German talent especially as we know that the German's are going to win the Euro's maybe we could sign Ballack as well for the midfield????

Showing promise at only 24 which is you g for a goalkeeper. Happy to see us looking abroad , if the fans give this lad a change we could have a nice player on our hands. Here's hoping

As much as i enjoy reading stories like this, one thing alarms me.......if he is on trial during pre-season and turns out not to be any good it will not leave us much time to find someone else and i worry we will make a panic buy!

Like this, specially since he could be a number one for years to come. Agree with MunichBlue about the dutchies though!

This proves that there are players out there who would like to play for town. PJ ,it's your job to find the good ones.

Worth a look but is he going to be any better than ALB?...for the record I think ALB gets unfairly over criticised at times.

He sounds a bit of a punt due to the low level at which he has played, but Bayern Munich must have seen something in him and he's only 24 so we're right to take a look at him. Like other posters, I am pleased that we are looking overseas at last rather than focussing on the top two leagues in England which have some of the most inflated player and wage costs in the world.

Perhaps if Riedmüller passes his trial we could sign him and Loach? They and Lee-Barrett could compete for the goalkeeper's jersey, and we would have plenty of cover. I expect we could pay the three of them for about half what Fulop was taking home!

If he's third choice at a club like Bayern then surely he's good enough for The Championship. Despite all the doom and gloom that's been going on on this site and many of us not happy with Cleggy pi$$ing abouot in the Lake District with an olympic torch stories like this are encouraging as they show we are serious about recruiting quality players from outside the UK.

Lightningboy, with you on that one. ALB is a good keeper but his head drops when he makes a mistake, probably because he knows he's in for a slating from a lot of fans who like nothing better to get on players backs as soon as they make a mistake. Players who thrive when high in confidence need a boost when they get something wrong, not constant criticism.

gd gd this would be a good signing if we eventualy get him if he is as good as we need a decent keeper but hopefully thats one much needed signing ticked off now all we need is a central defender
