Cropper on Trial at Southampton
Cropper on Trial at Southampton
Wednesday, 11th Jul 2012 00:25

Former Blues keeper Cody Cropper is on trial with Premier League new boys Southampton. The US U20 international was released by Town at the end of the season.

The 19-year-old played for a Saints U21 side as they beat Sholing 2-1 in an early pre-season friendly on Tuesday night.

Cropper, who spent time training with the Seattle Sounders back in the US in May, never made a first team appearance for the Blues but was on the senior side's bench on three occasions.

Sure they'll be a couple.

Just out of interest, have you seen Cropper play?

Although he may not have been brilliant i think hes good enough to have as reserve, we desperately need a permanent new number 1 though!

This shows the difference between us and Saints. They have a superb academy where they have an u18 team but also a development squad to bridge gap to first team. GKs are not going to be ready Physically and mentally at 18 or 19 so to make a decision on them at that point isn't correct. To allow them to develop in a more competitive environment is what we need to do but ate years behind likes of Soton and Reading.

If you were to keep 4 players on and just one were to make it would be totally worthwhile.

I think Cropper should've been given another year from the limited amount of him I saw for U18s, but where would he have gone as we don't have structure in place to get players from academy to first team unless they are exceptional

Why can't everyone who has a criticism, of any kind, to make be as reasonable & articulate as itfcjoe? The being knowlegable and objective aspect would be just too much to ask & I don't want to appear greedy.

let's be honest here. southampton have a state of the art academy, and they are like arsenal, they can sign a player, and basically, 'make him good'. so if they do sign him, don't be surprised if he ends up as a great shot stopper. anyway, i say keiron westwood, alex smithies, or scott loach. none of them are out of our league! COYB!

Itfc1981 - Are you really a true fan ???, all you do is bitch and criticise, constructive criticism i can handle but that would mean you would have to use a brain cell, maybe someone could lend you one !!!!

Have to trust the clubs descision on Cody but the keeper situation is still a worry, lets hope it can be sorted, PJ did say getting the spine of the team is important! so no more loans in goalie postion and sorry but no more Jitterbug Barrett. Harsh but true.

itfc1981 - is there anyone at the club you like/rate ?

@itfcjoe - to say a keeper isn't 'ready' isn't ready at 18-19 I find to be completely rubbish (no offence!). If he was good enough and had the ability then he could have played. I'm only 19 and have been playing adults football as a keeper and its not that bad at all. relatively speaking he'd be able to deal with it. Good luck to the lad, I do find it interesting how a 'better' team took him on, I wasn't expecting that!

They may have a good academy but their number 2 keeper is the mighty Bartosz Bialakowski. I would imagine Cody is already better than him

@danpage - I don't think the step up is huge, but you look at someone like Stockdale, he's seen as an inexperienced keeper but is 25. This Butland kid is seen as exceptional but has been on loan at L2 Cheltenham. For Cropper he won't be playing first team at Prem/Champ or even L1 next year so we need to develop him as US U20 coaches see something in him and they are a country that produces keepers

Only goes to further prove why we shouldn't have let him go.. especially with only one goalie now on our books.

Diabolical decision to let him go - hope he makes good at Southampton.
As if Southampton don't know what they are doing. - another cracking decision from our Clubs decision makers, whoever they may be.

Sindre94 - of course - that's why Southampton are giving him a trial ......... because he isn't that good !!!!!
I think you would condone EVERY decision made at this Club - however idiotic it was.

itfcjoe - spot on post.

braintreeblue blue10 - wouldn't be a bad idea to look in the mirror and ask yourself if you know what 'constructive critism is' - you certainly don't seem to recognise it when it stares you in the face, for whatever reason.

Bobblehat - condoning the ridiculous again - as usual - ignoring the obvious.

Dozzells_Bobblehat added 00:47 - Jul 12
h32 - what exactly have i condoned ?? i asked if there was anyone he rated or liked.. I have never seen Cropper play so i cant really comment can i . Oh hang on i forgot, you dont need facts to make comments do you . Sorry my mistake.

Bobblehat - you're the expert at that ....... I personally would have thought that a forward thinking Club like Southampton being interested in Cropper would realistically told you something something - you having seen him play, or indeed not.

Most of your posts are tainted with sarcasm - as indeed the one I referred to was - although agreed, not aimed at me in this instance.
