Malcolm Set for Trial - Ipswich Town News

Boss Jim Magilton has revealed that released Rangers defender Bob Malcolm will be joining the Blues on trial this week. The Town manager has also confirmed that Dutch defender Joey Van Den Berg is on trial at Portman Road, as reported by TWTD on Friday.

Malcolm has been linked with the Blues throughout the summer and is available outside the transfer window after having had the remaining year of his contract at Ibrox cancelled by new manager Paul Le Guen.

Magilton says he has been monitoring the 25-year-old's progress this summer, the Blues having had him watched in a pre-season friendly with Clyde: "Bob Malcolm is someone that will come down next week to have a look at us and we will have a look at him."

Coventry, Wolves and Dundee United have also been reported to have shown an interest in the centre-half or holding midfield player this summer.

Glasgow-born Malcolm progressed through the youth scheme at Ibrox and has been in and out of the first team since making his senior debut in a 3-0 victory over Dundee United in April 2000.

Malcolm has appeared destined to leave the club he supported as a boy on a number of occasions, but was offered a two-year contract by former boss Alex McLeish this time last year.

Sometimes a controversial figure, Malcolm was fined £5,000 in May 2004 for adding a sectarian comment when giving a fan an autograph.

Malcolm has made 66 career starts and 22 substitute appearances for his only club, scoring three goals.

Magilton says he has been impressed by 20-year-old former Heerenveen defender Joey Van Den Berg in training so far. Like Malcolm, Van Den Berg can join the Blues outside the transfer window as he is not currently with a club.
