Crewe Cut Unbeaten Run - Ipswich Town News

Town fell to their first defeat of the season last night when they fell 2-1 to Crewe Alexandra. However, it was in the Worthington Cup and Town appeared to have little appetite for the hugely devalued competition on the night. Town actually took the lead through a rasping Mark Venus free-kick on 30 minutes. This came as a surprise as Crewe had been the more industrious side up to this point.

The second half, however, saw Town concede two goals (memories of Sheffield United anyone?) which came as little surprise. Crewe's first came on 67 through a Mark Rivers lob after a neat ball through from Colin Cramb after Matt Holland had lost the ball. Crewe's winner came four minutes from time when Colin Little beat Richard Wright at the third attempt after the 'keeper had made two good saves.

With the second leg at Portman Road next Tuesday the tie is by no means dead, however after last season and last night Crewe are beginning to become a bit of a pain.

Twon side: R Wright, Stockwell, Clapham, Thetis, Venus, McGreal, Holland, Magilton, J Wright, Johnson (Scowcroft 61), Naylor (Axeldal 69)

Unused Subs: Salmon, Wilnis, Brown.
