My Bizarre Day - Ipswich Town News

Town fan Russell Turner didn't enjoy his trip to Portman Road at the weekend. He told TWTD why.

I went to the game with Burnley on Saturday but missed most part of first half because I got stuck on M11 in traffic.

When I finally got to the ground, the back of the North Stand, I went to the one remaining open turnstile to purchase a lower tier ticket.

However, I was prevented from doing so and a steward told me I had to purchase a £30 ticket for upper North. I refused and asked again for a full price North Stand lower ticket.

After the steward refused to accept money for a NS lower ticket the police arrived. Having explained my situation the police officer said, "If you don't like it go and support another club".

I was stunned. The steward just looked on and said nothing and I walked back to my car to make the return trip, amazed that I had been refused entry to watch my team.

Meanwhile, by complete coincidence, my mate Ollie was also being told to leave the ground by stewards, for bringing a beer onto the terraces. My mate had explained that it wasn't his beer, despite it being under his seat.

The steward told him that they had CCTV footage of him carrying it in and asked him to go on to the concourse to drink it. Ollie asked to see the footage, but they refused to show him.

The police then became involved and, after refusing his request to be breathalysed (he hadn't had anything to drink, let alone the beer in question), subsequently confiscated his season ticket and ejected him from the stadium.

He was then told he could go to an appeal hearing to get his ticket back. As a solicitor, Ollie is now looking into his options.

We both feel really gutted and let down as long-standing Town supporters — I've been watching them for 25 years - and have written to the club to complain about the way we were treated.

I left, leaving the noise of the Portman Road crowd behind me, and made my way back to London. On the way home I stopped to hear the final score on Radio Suffolk and then phoned in to let them know my bizarre day.
