Wales Waiting on Roberts - Ipswich Town News

On-loan midfielder Gary Roberts says he is still to dig out the paperwork which will confirm his eligibility for Wales. TWTD reported the principality's interest in capping the 22-year-old early last month.

Wales U21 boss Brian Flynn watched Roberts in action for Accrington Stanley back in February and was very impressed. However, the Football Association of Wales needed confirmation that the Chester-born player's maternal grandmother was Welsh.

Roberts says he's still to find it but is keen to play for Wales: "The Welsh FA think my nan was Welsh so I'm eligible to play for Wales. But before John Toshack can call me up they need to see her birth certificate to prove she was born in Wales.

"I haven't had a chance to do that yet - but I will do it before Wales' next game. "

The next Wales match is in February and Town could have three players involved, with Lewis Price and Gavin Williams previously included in Toshack's squads.

Roberts has already received some international recognition. Last season he won caps with the England National Game XI, the non-league England side. Caps at this level would not prevent the the former Liverpool trainee from appearing for Wales.

The winger is expected to complete his permanent move to Town in January for a fee of around £200,000. The Blues have already paid Accrington Stanley a five-figure loan fee in order secure his services from October to January.
