Southend 1-3 Reserves - Ipswich Town News

Liam Trotter scored twice and Jordan Rhodes once as Town's second string easily overcame Southend at Roots Hall. Trotter, on loan at Millwall earlier in the season, played much of the game in an unfamilar front role and might even have had a hat-trick with another effort hitting the post.

Town, watched by boss Jim Magilton, surprisingly found themselves behind at the break having dominated, James Lawson netting for the home side two minutes before the whistle.

The Blues got back on terms via Trotter on 68, the midfielder adding a second six minutes later, prior to Rhodes completing the scoring with 13 minutes remaining.

Town would have won more comfortably but for a fine performance from Shrimpers' keeper Steve Collis, while Rhodes had a goal disallowed. At the other end, Shane Supple was rarely called into action.

Recent signing George O'Callaghan started the game up front but switched with Trotter, prior to the FA Youth Cup winner scoring his goals.

Southend featured released Town defender Luke Webster playing in midfield. The 18-year-old did OK but is set now set for a spell on trial with Yeovil Town.

Reserves: Supple, Sito (Short 75), Synnott, Smith, Barron, Upson, Trotter, Currie, Richards (Robinson 82), O'Callaghan (Reason 62), Rhodes. Unused: Plummer, Fenn.
