U18s Defeat Charlton - Ipswich Town News

Town's U18s recorded a 3-2 victory over their Charlton Athletic counterparts at Playford Road on Saturday morning. Striker Craig Calver, making his full debut for the U18s, opened the scoring with Jordan Rhodes and Ian Nimmo also on the scoresheet.

Calver, 16, who will join the academy full-time in the summer, struck after 10 minutes. Ollie Fenn played a long ball over the visitors' defence before Calver beat another man and hit the ball across the keeper and into the net.

Charlton equalised with a free header from a corner and the visitors took the lead when an Addicks striker converted a one-on-one chance with a shot that flew underneath keeper Plummer.

Town were back in it with around 20 minutes remaining when Jordan Rhodes scored his fifth goal in as many U18 games. Ian Nimmo played the ball to Calver's chest before he beat his marker and set-up Rhodes who tapped in from six yards out.

With around 10 minutes remaining, Town took all three points. Scottish midfielder Nimmo cut in from the left wing, beat a defender and hit the ball into the bottom corner.

Jai Reason and Ed Upson again ran the midfield, while Ollie Fenn looked assured at the back in front of Andy Plummer who made a couple of fine saves. Up front, Craig Calver scored one himself and set another up for his strike partner and he looks a very good prospect.

Town included Matt Daniels on the bench, a central midfielder who has impressed while on trial having left Norwich City and will be another of this summer's first-year scholars.

The Blues' U16 side were thrashed 5-1 by Charlton. The Town goal came from striker Toby Osborne, who is on trial from Bristol City.

U18s: Plummer, Short, Robinson, Reason, C Williams, Fenn, Upson, Nimmo, Calver, Rhodes and Webster. Unused subs: Boto, Clemo and Daniels.
