Legend Garneys Dies - Ipswich Town News
Tom Garneys, a 1950s Town legend, has died at the age of 83. Garneys played for the Blues between 1951 and 1959.
The Leyton-born striker, who had previously played for Leytonstone, Notts County, Chingford Town and Brentford, scored 143 goals in 274 appearances for Town and is fourth in the club's list of all-time goalscorers behind Ray Crawford, Ted Phillips and John Wark.
The centre-forward, who was always an aerial threat, won Division Three South winners medals in 1954 and 1957 before a back injury forced him into retirement.
After hanging up his boots, Garneys ran the Mulberry Tree pub (now The Milestone) in the town centre but eventually moved to Billericay in Essex and was living in a nursing home in Basildon when he did as the result of an illness.
