Alexander Set to Sign - Ipswich Town News

Town are set to sign former Cardiff keeper Neil Alexander on a free transfer. The 29-year-old turned down the offer of a new deal at Ninian Park and left the Bluebirds at the end of the season after six years.

Edinburgh-born Alexander made 233 starts and one sub appearance for Cardiff, having joined them in 2001 from Livingston for £200,000. Capped three times by Scotland, Alexander made 75 appearances while at Almondvale, having moved from his first club Stenhousemuir on a free transfer in 1998 after two years and 45 appearances for the Ochilview Park club.

The 29-year-old's agent Andy Evans said last week that his player was interesting a number of sides: "Neil has had several offers from Championship clubs and some in Scotland.

"But there is no immediate rush and he wants to be certain his decision now is the right one.”

Alexander was first linked with the Blues in May but at the time it appeared that Town were close to signing Richard Wright. Boss Jim Magilton turned his attention back to the 6ft 1in tall glovesman after Wright opted to join West Ham last week.

Magilton has long been targeting an experienced keeper and last season took Jaroslav Drobný on a short-term deal and Mike Pollitt on loan.

The addition of a new goalkeeper is almost certain to mean an end to Lewis Price's Town career. The Wales international will need to be playing regular first team football in order to push himself back into John Toshack's plans.

Price has a year left on his current contract and is likely to cost somewhere around the £200,000 mark.
