Northampton 0-3 Town - Ipswich Town News

Danny Haynes netted a hat-trick as Town's reserves got their Pontin's Holidays Football Combination League season off to a winning start with a 3-0 victory over Northampton at a cold, dry Sixfields.

Haynes, sent off for a headbutt in last week's play-off game with Brighton, opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a close range shot from a Matt Richards corner.

Town were on top with the home side's only chance coming on 15 when they shot over the bar after sloppy play by Sito.

On the half hour, Haynes added the second from the spot after he was brought down as he ran into the box.

Four minutes later, the Cobblers forced Supple into a save after a mistake by Michael Synnott.

Northampton started the second half brightly, but Town gradually took control with a number of long-range efforts from Williams, Upson and Haynes.

Haynes made a good run and cross on 59 but Upson's shot was too weak to trouble the Cobblers' keeper.

A minute later, Haynes completed his hat-trick with a bullet-like header from another Matt Richards corner.

Town were on top for the rest of the game, although the substitutions broke up the game and Sito and Matt Richards moving into midfield.

Man of the match was unsurprisingly Danny Haynes, but Matt Richards was again impressive, particularly from corners, while Ed Upson improved upon a poor display for the U18s on Saturday.

Scottish youngster Paul Watson, one of this year's new intake of scholars, put in a fine debut for the reserves at centre-half before limping off in the second half. Jordan Rhodes, who signed a new professional contract earlier in the week, and Jaime Peters both had uncharacteristically quiet games.

The crowd of around 100 included scouts from Spurs and West Ham, and from the other end of football Shrewsbury and Stafford Rangers. Bryan Klug and Steve Greaves took control of the Town side with Andy Rhodes, Tony Humes and Charlie Woods watching on from the stands. Sitting with them were director for football at Lincoln City John Deehan and Kevin Wilson, now manager of Corby Town.

Reserves: Supple, Sito, Richards, Trotter, Synnott (c), Watson (Tooms 71), Upson (Clemo 78), C Williams, Rhodes (Ainsley 75), Haynes, Peters. Unused: Plummer.
