Wine Marathon for Fan - Ipswich Town News

Town fan and TWTD reader Tony Robinson is taking part in the world's ultimate fun run next month to raise money to help local children in hospital.

Tony is running the Marathon Du Medoc in France to raise funds for The Sick Children's Trust which runs Acorn House — a home from home at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

On September 8th Tony, 42, will be one of 8,000 runners in the 26-mile race through 21 vineyards in the famous Bordeaux wine-growing region. Along the route there are 23 stopping points where runners are offered a glass of vintage wine - or plain water, if they insist.

"The course appears more like a wine list than a race,” Tony told TWTD. "We take in Chateau Lafite, Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Pichon. I'm told that some runners take it very seriously, but most are there to have fun. There are also five French doctors on hand, which is reassuring.”

Both Tony's brother Thomas and sister-in-law Liza work as nurses at Addenbrooke's Hospital where many children from across East Anglia region are treated. Acorn House allows parents and families to stay free of charge for as long as they need whilst their child is undergoing treatment. It is open seven days a week, accommodates around 750 families a year and is funded entirely by public donations.
