Jim in No Hurry - Ipswich Town News

Boss Jim Magilton says he is in no hurry to add a central defender to his squad, despite missing out on signing César Navas, who decided to join Racing Santander from Málaga rather than the Blues earlier in the week.

Magilton said earlier in the week that the Blues were targeting a versatile Premiership defender on loan, but at the moment he is happy to stick with players already at Portman Road, despite Fabian Wilnis's suspension for two more games and Richard Naylor's unavailability after toe surgery until October.

The Town manager told the club site that Chris Casement and Tommy Smith will come into his plans if cover is required: "Chris has made huge strides and we are very happy with his progress.

"Tommy Smith will be back from [the FIFA U17 World Cup in] Korea soon as well and we think very highly of him, so we have got cover from within the squad.

"David Wright played in the middle of the back four at Crewe and Wigan, so he is another option should Alex or Jason take a knock.

"We will have another look at the situation after the Watford game and we have got contingency plans should we need them, but I'm certainly in no rush to bring in another defender. If we do bring someone to the club it will be a loan player."

Despite the transfer window closing later today, the Blues will be able to bring players in on an ‘emergency' loan basis from next week. No further moves, either incoming or outgoing, are expected today.

Elsewhere, Marcus Bent has joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan from Charlton, while Martin Brittain, released by the Blues in the summer, has left Carlisle after a short-term contract with the Cumbrians.
