Mariner Withdraws From Race for Bermuda Role - Ipswich Town News

Town legend Paul Mariner has withdrawn an application to become the technical director of the Bermudian FA. Mariner, currently the assistant coach with MLS side the New England Revolution, applied for the position in October.

Mariner's change of mind may be linked to the possibility of taking on a head coach's job in the MLS.

Last month he was mentioned in connection with the New York Red Bulls, however, TWTD's man in the US says Steve Nichol, currently head coach with the Revolution, could be on his way to take on a similar role at Toronto FC, opening the way for Mariner to take the helm at his current club.

Elsewhere in North America, former Town man Bruce Twamley is set to be named in the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame in April. Twamley was with the Blues between 1969 and 1975, but made only two senior appearances.

The full-back has been given the honour for his work in coaching, which saw him take Canada to a first-place finish at the 1996 CONCACAF U20 tournament and qualify for the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championships.

Despite being handed the award by the Canada Soccer Association, Twamley is not impressed with the organisation: "Whatever success we have is despite Association. I think things have been mismanaged for a long time.”

Former Blues Craig Forrest and Frank Yallop have previously been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

More locally, Brighton are reported to be interested in re-signing ex-Town winger Darren Currie. The 33-year-old has only been on the fringes at Luton since joining the Hatters from the Blues on a free transfer in the summer.
