American Keeper on Trial - Ipswich Town News

TWTD understands that American goalkeeper Kenneth Kronholm is spending the week on trial with the Blues. Kronholm, 22, is currently on the books of FSV Frankfurt, who play in Oberliga Hessen (IV), the fourth tier of German football.

Although born in the US, Kronholm has spent much of his life living in Germany and is a German citizen.

The 6ft 2in tall keeper played youth football for SG Oftersheim and SV Waldhof Mannheim, then in July 2003 moved on to VFL Wolfsburg, where he was involved with their reserve side, joining Carl Zeiss Jena in January 2005.

The delightfully named Wormatia Worms acquired Kronholm's services six months later, prior to a switch to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the summer of 2006, before he joined FSV Frankfurt in the summer.

German football is currently on its winter break which means Kronholm is able to spend time at Portman Road.

At the end of last season, Kronholm was close to a move into the Championship with Coventry City. Town boss Jim Magilton is close friends with Sky Blues manager Iain Dowie, who may well have recommended the keeper to his former Northern Ireland team-mate.

Town continue to look at Polish international winger Damian Gorawski and former Liverpool academy midfielder Charlie Barnett.

Meanwhile, the Blues are reportedly amongst a number of clubs interested in Crewe Alexandra defensive central midfielder Gary Roberts, not to be confused with Town's own less combative midfielder Gary Roberts.

Bolton, Wigan, Leicester, Plymouth, Town and QPR are all reported to have watched the 20-year-old in action this season. Roberts, a freekick and penalty specialist who can also play in wide positions, is contracted to Alexandra until 2009, but is understood to have refused to sign an extension to that deal.

Born in Chester, coincidentally also Town's Gary Roberts's home town, Roberts came through the youth system at Gresty Road.
